A new game releasing for the Nintendo Switch and other platforms takes direct inspiration from Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise, but adds co-op to the mix. The Legend of Zelda has primarily been a single-player franchise throughout most of its existence, but there have been rare occasions when it’s experimented with co-op.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords on the Game Boy Advance offered classic-style 2D Zelda fully playable in co-op, and Four Swords Adventures took that concept to the next level on the Nintendo GameCube. The poorly-received Tri Force Heroes was a three-player co-op adventure, and the Hyrule Warriors spin-off games feature co-op as one of their main features. Time will tell if any future Zelda games feature co-op or not, but in the meantime, fans can check out an upcoming indie game to get their co-op Zelda fix.
Isles of Reveries is Inspired by Old-School Zelda

Set to launch on September 4, Isles of Reveries is a new game releasing for Switch, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox. Developed by desertcucco, Isles of Reveries features an art style that is highly reminiscent of classic Zelda games, specifically Link’s Awakening. The game features dungeons and puzzles that take clear inspiration from Zelda, and the main character, an owl named Lief, has a magical fairy companion at his side. The game features town-building mechanics to go along with its dungeon crawling, plus a local co-op mode.

Isles of Reveries‘ local co-op allows players to complete multiplayer dungeons with a friend. This way, people looking for a classic-style single-player Zelda experience can get it from Isle of Reveries, but they can also enjoy a multiplayer-focused take on the gameplay as well. What’s been shown of Isles of Reveries so far looks impressive, and if the game lives up to expectations, it could very well help tide Zelda fans over while they wait for the next major release in the franchise.
As it stands, Nintendo has yet to announce a release date for the next Legend of Zelda game. We do know that the next game in the franchise is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for the Nintendo Switch 2, but the scope of the project has yet to be revealed. All Nintendo has shown so far is a short cinematic of Link sleeping in his house and nothing else. Nintendo tends to release one major game per month, and so, while it hasn’t revealed an exact release date yet, chances are that the game will release at some point in November before Black Friday.
More information on the Ocarina of Time remake should come sooner rather than later. It’s heavily rumored that a Nintendo Direct is going to take place in September, perhaps one entirely focused on the Zelda franchise. 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Zelda series, after all, and so it would make sense for Nintendo to capitalize with a big reveal of the OoT remake. Perhaps fans will also get updates on long-rumored Zelda projects like the Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD Switch ports as well. Time will tell, but in the meantime, Zelda-like games like Isles of Reveries can keep fans busy.
