New Vegas Designer Comments on the Possibility of a Remaster

New Vegas Designer Comments on the Possibility of a Remaster

Fallout: New Vegas isn’t likely to get a remaster any time soon, according to the game’s original designer, Chris Avellone. Rumors of a potential Fallout: New Vegas remaster or remake have circulated among Fallout fans in the wake of Season 2 of the Amazon Prime series taking Lucy, The Ghoul, and Maximus to the iconic Mojave Wasteland. However, no official announcement from Bethesda has been made regarding the project at this time.

The Fallout franchise has been light on video game releases in the time since the last entry, Fallout 76, released almost 8 years ago in 2018. While Fallout fans have been able to enjoy two seasons of Amazon Prime’s Fallout series in recent years, a new game in the franchise still seems years away, with Bethesda confirming that Fallout 5 will be the next game the studio works on after The Elder Scrolls 6 is released. In the meantime, Fallout fans are hoping to see some of the older games in the franchise get the remaster treatment, but Chris Avellone now says fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a New Vegas remaster in the near future.

The Fallout Games’ Biggest Antagonists and Their Future Backed By Gamers

The most antagonistic faction in Fallout has faced criticism for being overused, but fans have been voicing their support for more.

Fallout: New Vegas Designer Chris Avellone Doesn’t Think Bethesda Could Easily Produce a Remaster

In an interview with Fallout YouTuber TKs-Mantis, Avellone states that he believes Bethesda “doesn’t have the engineering know-how to make a remaster of New Vegas.” His opinion stems from the fact that Obsidian Entertainment, the original developers of Fallout: New Vegas, never delivered the final source code to Bethesda after the game was complete. As a result, Bethesda would have to essentially re-create New Vegas from scratch, a task that might be too ambitious for a remaster.

One solution Avellone proposed was for Bethesda to potentially take the original Creation Engine version of New Vegas and wrap Unreal Engine’s visuals around it, similar to how The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was created. However, Avellone notes that Bethesda would likely want to test this process out with a remaster of Fallout 3 before moving on to attempt a New Vegas remaster. Since both Obsidian and Bethesda are part of the same parent company, Microsoft, it’s possible that the two studios could collaborate to remaster New Vegas, but this isn’t a guaranteed partnership.

Avellone has quite a storied history with the Fallout series and RPGs as a whole. Not only does he have credits for his work on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, but Avellone has also contributed to games like Planetscape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, and Neverwinter Nights 2. Avellone was also a co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, so he has a firm understanding of the game development pipeline, especially when it comes to crafting RPGs.

Despite these discouraging comments from Avellone, there is still hope that a Fallout: New Vegas remaster will eventually see the light of day. In the meantime, there are hints suggesting that Bethesda is working on a Fallout 3 remaster, including credible insiders reporting the development of a Fallout 3 remaster and even toy listings referencing Fallout 3 Remastered appearing online. While it may not be the New Vegas remaster some fans are hoping for, if Avellone’s thoughts are any indication, Bethesda could be laying the groundwork for a full-scale New Vegas remaster with one for Fallout 3 leading the charge.
