New Witcher 3 Remastered Preset Shows What RPG Accessibility Can Be

New Witcher 3 Remastered Preset Shows What RPG Accessibility Can Be

There is no denying that RPGs can be pretty exhausting. Sometimes players are required to play for long periods of time and pay close attention to several different mechanics at the same time, all while managing equipment, keeping track of resources, and dealing with all kinds of other limitations. It’s safe to say that not everybody enjoys spending so much time dealing with all of this, and for some players, the entire experience can become extremely tiring, especially during prolonged gameplay. However, it seems like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is willing to try and change this rite of passage.

The title is adding the so-called Bard’s Ballad preset, and it is designed for players who experience mental fatigue or have difficulty concentrating. It introduces seven settings that aim to simplify certain mechanics without changing the core experience so much that people feel like something is lacking. Moreover, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered shows why RPG accessibility shouldn’t necessarily be limited to making enemies weaker or introducing a huge change that alters the entire game.

You can get The Witcher 3 Remastered for free, including Hearts of Stone & Blood and Wine, provided that you have the original game.

RPG Accessibility Should Go Beyond Combat Difficulty

Generally, most RPG mechanics require players to spend quite some time managing things that may not even be that important. And even if they are, some people just don’t want to spend a crazy amount of time repairing equipment and would rather get out there and explore the world, have fun, talk to NPCs, and whatever else comes to mind that is not mind-numbingly boring. For example, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered has found a pretty good way to deal with that by introducing an Unlimited Item Durability setting that removes the need to constantly deal with broken equipment. There is also the Ignore Item Weight option that allows players to ignore inventory weight restrictions.

Although these additions are quite simple, they actually improve accessibility by a ton, and what’s more important is that neither of these activities is essential to the game’s story, quests, or character progression, so using the new features doesn’t take away from the experience. Of course, we also have players who genuinely enjoy managing their equipment and keeping track of their resources, and they can keep doing that. Many players will agree that this is the perfect balance, and it allows players to have the best of both worlds. After all, it’s safe to say that it’s impossible for an RPG to lose its depth just because someone doesn’t need to repair their weapons anymore.

Moreover, when we talk about accessibility in RPGs, most people tend to focus almost entirely on combat difficulty, but fighting enemies is not the only activity that can become exhausting. The Bard’s Ballad preset introduces a Toggle Witcher Senses setting that also allows players to activate and deactivate Geralt’s senses without holding down a button. This makes exploration more comfortable, especially for people who struggle with prolonged button presses. The new preset also includes Faster Boats to reduce the time spent traveling across water and Infinite Breath that removes the need to monitor oxygen levels while swimming underwater. These additions are quite small, but the impact they have on accessibility is huge.

Customizable Accessibility Gives Players More Control Over Their Experience

It goes without saying that simplifying certain mechanics is not something that everyone out there would appreciate, and this is exactly the reason why it’s a good idea to make all the available accessibility settings customizable. In the case of Bard’s Ballad, the settings can be enabled or disabled individually, and there’s even a Vitality Regeneration Boost option that allows players to adjust when health regeneration should activate and how effective it is. Moreover, Bard’s Ballad can be activated when starting a new game on Just the Story difficulty or during an existing playthrough. In other words, players don’t really have to start over if they decide that a certain mechanic is becoming a little too exhausting for their taste.

An important aspect to discuss is how easily players can find and use the available accessibility settings. For example, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered has a special dedicated Accessibility section that brings together all of the existing options, so players can make adjustments directly through the game’s menu instead of having to go through a thousand external modifications. Although this may seem like common sense, some RPGs have such terrible design that altering even the most basic settings is a pain. Ultimately, not every RPG needs to remove its more demanding mechanics or make them optional, but accessibility is now more important than ever as we live in a world where people are constantly bombarded with information, notifications, and all kinds of other overwhelming responsibilities in real life. After all, the idea of gaming is to offer a break from everyday stress rather than become another source of it.
