Next-Gen Xbox Console’s Launch Window Potentially Revealed

Next-Gen Xbox Console’s Launch Window Potentially Revealed

A “next-gen Xbox” was mentioned briefly during AMD’s latest earnings call. During the call, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su stated that the next Xbox is using an AMD semi-custom SoC (system-on-a-chip) and that the console is currently planned for release in 2027.

Xbox announced a “strategic multi-year partnership” with AMD back in June 2025. In this initial announcement, Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed that the company was working with AMD on its lineup of next-generation hardware including PC, handheld, Cloud, and console. However, Xbox and AMD’s relationship goes much further back, with both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S using AMD processors.

The Next Xbox Could Launch in 2027

Xbox's president confirms that Microsoft's next-gen console is in development

As first reported by Insider Gaming’s Robert DeFelice, AMD hosted its Q4 2025 earnings call on February 3. During the call, CEO Dr. Lisa Su discussed the current video game landscape and how AMD fits into it. Along with stating that AMD expects that revenue from video game console earnings will drop by a “significant double-digit percentage” in 2026, Dr. Su had this to say about AMD’s ongoing partnership with Xbox:

“Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.”

Of course, while Xbox leadership has confirmed that next-gen hardware is in development, Microsoft has yet to officially announce the next Xbox console or confirm a release window for it. One of the few official statements Xbox has made regarding new hardware is Sarah Bond’s comment that the next Xbox will be “a very premium, very high-end curated experience.” But if AMD’s latest earnings call is accurate, then fans could see an official next-gen Xbox announcement before the end of 2026. The Xbox Series X, for example, was officially unveiled during the 2019 Game Awards, almost an entire year before it hit store shelves.

What Will the Next Xbox Look Like?

Though fans should wait for an official announcement from Microsoft before getting too excited, AMD’s statement does line up with previous reports from well-known industry insiders. Windows Central’s Jez Corden first mentioned Xbox’s next console possibly having a 2027 release window in a March 2025 episode of The Xbox Two podcast. Corden also mentioned here that the next Xbox will likely be a “PC in essence.” Since then, Corden has made reference to the next-gen Xbox multiple times, with the most recent coming yesterday. In his latest feature for Windows Central, Corden claims that the next Xbox is “dropping in late 2027 at the earliest.” Corden said he was given details of Xbox’s next-gen console when he first learned of the ROG Xbox Ally. Jez Corden’s latest Windows Central report also claims that “the next Xbox is essentially going to be a full Windows PC” with a “controller-first interface.”

Rumors of the next Xbox being more like a PC than a traditional console have been circulating for some time now. In October 2025, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said (via a Famitsu interview) that the ROG Xbox Ally “hints at how the Xbox software platform will evolve in the future,” potentially teasing that the next Xbox will be a similar Windows-based experience with an Xbox overlay. Jez Corden’s latest report corroborated this theory, claiming that the ROG Xbox Ally’s Xbox Full Screen Experience is an “early vision” of what the next-gen Xbox is going to look like. If these theories and reports are true, then the next Xbox may also be able to run other storefronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store, allowing players to merge their Xbox and PC libraries.
