The future of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is back in question after the release of its big 3.0 update early in the year, with one top Nintendo of America official recently reporting that there are no additional plans related to the game that are ready for announcement at this point in time. While that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it does leave a question mark about when players can expect to see more content added, and if it’s coming at all.
The 3.0 update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons hit the game on January 14, bringing in a lot of extra activities for players to engage in. Arriving nearly six years after the cozy life sim’s March 2020 launch, and more than four years after the 2.0 update, version 3.0 gives players two big new areas to explore and decorate in the form of Kapp’n’s Family Hotel and the Slumber Islands. It also did a lot to improve maintenance on players’ main islands, increasing home storage space to 9,000 units and giving Mr. Resetti a new role in island clean-up and item management.

Animal Crossing’s Future Is Back In Question
While those features have brought long-time fans flocking back to the game, it’s unclear how long it will take for a big 4.0 update, or whether one is even in Nintendo’s plans. In a recent interview with Variety, published on Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ sixth anniversary, Nintendo of America vice president Reiko Ninomiya was asked about what fans can expect to see in the game’s future. “I totally appreciate that question, but we don’t have anything to announce,” she responded. Rather than revealing plans for any upcoming content, Ninomiya instead focused on the more tried-and-true elements of the game, saying she’s looking forward to the annual return of more bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, along with the Bug-Off insect-catching events held throughout the warmer months of the year.
One particular item of note that Ninomiya brought up during the interview is the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in early June 2025, which she noted allowed the developers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to incorporate a bunch of new features, like calling island residents to the player’s location, rather than having to search around for them. There are even more Switch-2 exclusive features that she didn’t mention, including improved visuals, support for GameChat, CameraPlay and mouse controls, and the ability to have up to 12 players wandering across the same island.
Still, plenty of fans of the Animal Crossing franchise have been eager to see a new game announced since well before the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. And after more than nine months since the hybrid console’s launch, they still haven’t gotten what they want from Nintendo. To its credit, the development team at Nintendo EPD has remained dedicated to the cozy life sim, including offering more support updates even after the content-heavy version 3.0 launch, but it still hasn’t quenched some fans’ thirst for a brand-new game.
And the life sim genre is starting to look a little crowded on Nintendo’s latest console, leaving the Animal Crossing franchise in potential danger of being overshadowed by other games that have already been released for the Switch 2. Many Animal Crossing fans have already found the similar gameplay and aesthetics of Pokemon Pokopia to be a welcome change, with some players even noting that Pokopia does some things better than Animal Crossing: New Horizons, like speeding up progression of player-built improvements and offering more reliable ways to attract the friends they want to see on their islands. The competition within the genre only looks to increase on April 16, when Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream arrives, offering similar island-building themes and deep social interactions between characters.
