New Analogue 3D Feature Is a Game-Changer

New Analogue 3D Feature Is a Game-Changer

A new feature has been added to the Analogue 3D, finally allowing users to create save states for their games. The Analogue 3D is a retro gaming system that allows users to play their old N64 cartridges in 4K. Not only is the system compatible with old cartridges, but it can also work with the original controllers, as well as N64 peripherals like the Rumble Pak and Controller Pak.

The Analogue 3D was delayed several times but was finally released in 2025. Reception to the system has been largely positive, similar to many of the company’s other products. However, Analogue has taken some time to deliver some of the features that were first announced, leaving fans waiting for the best possible N64 experience.

The 25 Rarest N64 Games (& How Much They’re Worth)

The rarest Nintendo 64 games can set collectors back thousands of dollars, and here are the most expensive N64 titles in 2026.

Analogue 3D Finally Offers Save States

After updating the system software to 3DOS v1.3.0, Analogue 3D systems will now have the Memory feature unlocked. The feature has two key benefits: users can now save their in-game progress at any time, and they can also preserve any save data at risk of being lost due to the cartridge’s built-in battery dying. This is a very real concern when it comes to older games, as those batteries were only built to last for so long. If players have data that really means a lot to them, it can now be preserved on the system.

The dedicated Nintendo Classics app on Switch has a lot of old N64 games that can be played, but some titles on the app have compromises from the original versions. For example, the Pokemon Stadium games don’t allow players to transfer Pokemon. That was the central hook of the Stadium games in the first place, and the feature still works on Analogue 3D, provided users have a Game Boy game and the Transfer Pak. Even if owners just have their old copy of Pokemon Stadium, the save state feature will make sure that players don’t lose their progress at Gym Leader Castle, or anything else they accomplished in the original game.

The N64 played host to a large library of games, including classics like Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye 007, and Super Mario 64. All of those games are playable through Nintendo Switch Online, but there are many others that will likely never be released on the subscription service. The fact of the matter is, licensing issues often make it difficult for older games to get a second release. N64 had a lot of high-quality licensed games, and Nintendo would have to jump through some expensive hoops to bring them to Switch. The Analogue 3D is a great alternative for those that want to experience the full depth of the system.

Following Analogue 3D’s latest update, it seems the system could be an even bigger draw for users than it was before. The addition of save states brings the system more in line with other products from the company, including the extremely popular Analogue Pocket. For those that have been holding off on buying an Analogue 3D, this might be the perfect excuse to finally make a purchase.
