Nintendo Has Sold 20 Million Switch 2s, But Worries About Future

Nintendo Has Sold 20 Million Switch 2s, But Worries About Future

Nintendo announced its latest financial results overnight, giving us a huge wealth of data on sales of both hardware and games over the first year of the new console. With just shy of 20 million Switch 2s sold since last June and almost 50 million games, it’s hard to view the launch as anything other than a massive success, but Nintendo is still responding with a big price rise and a lowering of its sales forecasts.

With all data accurate as of March 31, 2026, Nintendo has revealed just what a phenomenon the Switch 2 has been in its first nine months, announcing 19.86 million worldwide sales for the console, accompanied by 48.71 million software sales. At the same time the company has updated the original Switch’s numbers, which are now at a breathtaking 155.92 million sold, along with over 1.5 billion games.

Despite all this success, Nintendo has still lowered its expectations for the Switch 2. Over the next year the estimate has been reduced from 19.86 million new sales to 16.5 million, which is no small drop. Although the price increases—especially the far more significant rises in Japan—will likely make up for a big chunk of the expecting income.

It’s a Mario Kart world

Of the Switch 2’s 50 million games sold, a massive chunk of them were Mario Kart World. The game has sold 14.7 million copies over the last nine months, a full 30 percent of the total number of games sold for the console, which is just astonishing. Next up is Donkey Kong Bananza with 4.52 million copies, and then close behind is Pokémon Legends: Z-A at 3.94 million after five months.

But perhaps the most striking number in the list is Pokémon Pokopia, which had only been on sale for 26 days at the time these numbers were recorded, and had already shifted 2.41 million units. Last on the list is Kirby Air Riders which sold 1.87 million copies over its first four months, especially impressive given its comparatively lackluster reception.

Of course, these numbers are dwarfed by the original Switch’s game sales figures after nine years on shelves. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sits atop the list with an eye-watering 71.08 million copies in players’ hands, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons a fair distance behind in second place as it just narrowly misses 50 million total.
