Nintendo has given fans an update when it comes to Metroid Ravenous‘ Special Edition for the Switch 2. Metroid Ravenous was one of the biggest reveals at the latest Nintendo Direct. Even though the project was leaked ahead of time, it was still incredibly exciting to see a brand-new 2D Metroid game confirmed for the Switch 2. Better yet, the Metroid Ravenous trailer confirmed that fans won’t have to wait long at all to play the game for themselves.
The Metroid Ravenous reveal trailer confirmed that the new game will be released on January 28, 2027. So in less than five months, Switch 2 gamers will be able to play a brand-new 2D Metroid adventure, and one that looks like an evolution of the beloved Metroid Dread. Like all other Metroid games, Metroid Ravenous introduces new gimmicks (with Samus able to “devour” her enemies this time around) while retaining all the classic Metroidvania hallmarks that the franchise is known for. Fans excited about Metroid Ravenous may even be tempted to shell out cash for the Special Edition, but unfortunately, it’s already sold out.
Metroid Ravenous: Special Edition is Sold Out
The Metroid Ravenous Special Edition sold out rather quickly. Retailing for $119.99, the Metroid Ravenous Special Edition includes a physical copy of the game, a steelbook case, and the Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo figure. It has yet to be clarified if the amiibo figure is going to be sold separately, which makes the Special Edition even more highly sought-after by fans. The amiibo figure will unlock “in-game extras,” but what exactly those are remain to be seen. In any case, some Metroid fans may be bummed that the Special Edition is sold out, but Nintendo itself has encouraged them to “check back soon.” It’s not a lengthy statement by any means, but it does suggest that there is a good chance Metroid Ravenous will restock its Special Edition at some point between now and the game’s launch on January 28.
Those that aren’t concerned about getting the extra content in the Metroid Ravenous Special Edition can check out the other versions of the game. Metroid Ravenous sticks to Nintendo’s new pricing policy, which means the digital version of the game is cheaper than the physical version. For $59.99, you can pick up Metroid Ravenous digitally on Switch 2, while $69.99 gets you the physical version of the game. If Metroid Ravenous is anything like previous games in the series, chances are it’s going to be a rather short experience, and that might make the $70 price tag hard to swallow for some, but others will definitely think it’s worth the price of admission.
While Switch 2 gamers wait for Metroid Ravenous to release in January, they may want to take a trip down memory lane and play through older titles in the series. Luckily, there are plenty of Metroid games readily available to play on Switch 2, including the bulk of the main series entries. The only games not playable on Switch 2 at the time of this writing are Metroid Prime 2, Prime 3, Other M, and the DS/3DS games.
With Nintendo releasing a remaster of the original Metroid Prime for the Switch and GameCube games slowly being added to Switch 2’s Nintendo Classics library, chances are even more entries in the franchise will be playable sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Metroid fans can look forward to Ravenous when it releases in January and keep their fingers crossed that the Special Edition gets restocked.
