No, You Don’t Need to Trade to Get All the Eeveelutions

No, You Don’t Need to Trade to Get All the Eeveelutions

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players that want to collect all three Generation 1 Eeevee evolutions may not realize that they can do so without trading with their friends. There are some Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Pokemon only obtainable through trades, like the version exclusive Pokemon or the Pokemon that only evolve by trading. And then there are Pokemon that players effectively get locked out of acquiring in their playthrough, unless they manage to do a trade.

The Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen starters are a good example of that. After players choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, the other two Pokemon become unavailable unless they trade them to their game. Some might assume that the same would be the case with Eevee’s evolutions in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen since there’s only one Eevee in the game, but there is actually a way to get all the Eeveelutions without trading.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch Claim to Have All 151 Originals — Including Mew?

The upcoming Nintendo Switch ports of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are raising some big questions about Mew.

How to Get More Eevees in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Getting an Eevee in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is a matter of going to Celadon City’s mansion and grabbing the Poke Ball off the table on the top floor. Then it’s just a matter of collecting a Fire Stone, Water Stone, or Thunder Stone to evolve the Eevee into a Flareon, Vaporeon, or Jolteon. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Evolution Stones are found at various places throughout the games, but they can also be purchased in Celadon City. Now the trick is getting two more Eevees, which will require players to defeat the Elite Four and get to the endgame content.

Once players reach Four Island, they need to leave their Eevee/Flareon/Jolteon/Vaporeon and a Ditto at the daycare there to get an egg with an Eevee in it. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players can catch a Ditto on Routes 13, 14, 15, Cinnabar Island’s Pokemon Mansion, and the Cerulean Cave, though they are relatively hard to find. Dittos are super useful when it comes to Pokemon breeding.

With an Eevee egg in tow, players need to walk over 9,000 steps, and it will hatch. Then they can use one of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Evolution Stones to get another one of the Eeveelutions, rinse and repeat.

Most of the Eeveelutions Aren’t Available in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Unfortunately for Pokemon fans that prefer some of Eevee’s later evolutions, Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon are the only ones available to catch in-game. Umbreon and Espeon are not available in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (without trading from other Pokemon games, which is not possible in the Switch versions at the time of this writing), and neither are Leafeon, Glaceon, or Sylveon.

There are rumblings that the other Game Boy Advance Pokemon games will eventually come to the Nintendo Switch at some point down the line. If that happens, then it may become possible to get Umbreon and Espeon in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Eventual Pokemon Home support may also make it possible. But for now, the only Eeveelutions that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players can get on Switch are Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon.
