Nostalgia Wins: Remakes And Remasters Reached 138 Million Downloads In 2025

It’s no secret that video game remakes and remasters continue to be popular, but just how many were downloaded in 2025? According to new research by Sensor Tower, a staggering number of people chose to revisit old games that had been given an upgrade, as the analytics firm says that there were 138 million downloads of remakes and remasters across the globe.

That number was split, with 60 million downloads being for remakes and 78 million downloads of remasters being recorded. Focusing purely on remakes, Delta Force did particularly well with 14.5 million downloads for the free-to-play shooter alone, and Ark: Survival Ascended came in second place with 4.35 million downloads. Here’s a closer look at how that list shaped up:

Video game remake downloads in 2025

  • Delta Force — 14.5 million downloads
  • Ark Survival Ascended — 4.35 million downloads
  • Metro 20233 Redux — 3.89 million downloads
  • The Last of Us Part 1 — 3.02 million downloads
  • Resident Evil 4 — 2.70 million downloads
  • Silent Hill 2 — 2.62 million downloads
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition — 2.12 million downloads
  • Resident Evil 2 — 1.73 million downloads
  • Pac-Man World; Re-Pac — 1.52 million downloads
  • Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater — 1.39 million downloads

So how did remasters do in comparison? Unsurprisingly, Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced was at the top of the list with 13.1 million downloads, followed by The Elder Scrolls Online 4: Oblivion Remastered and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered. Another notable game on the list was Gears of War: Reloaded, which had a multiplatform launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

Video game remaster downloads in 2025

  • Grand Theft Auto 5: Enhanced — 13.1 million downloads
  • The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered — 8.03 million downloads
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered — 3.82 million downloads
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 — 2.72 million downloads
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition — 2.49 million downloads
  • Gears of War: Reloaded — 2.48 million downloads
  • The Last of Us Part 2 — 2.34 million downloads
  • Ninja Gaiden 2 Black — 2.13 million downloads
  • Grand Theft Auto 3: The Definitive Edition — 1.91 million downloads
  • Sonic Colors: Ultimate — 1.69 million downloads

It’s also worth noting that research done last year by specialist strategy and insights consultancy firm MTM found that these types of games are “desirable” diversions. The data suggested that there is a strong appeal for remakes and remasters. Many of these games are “far out-selling” their original release, giving publishers plenty of incentive to revive classic properties.

This was especially prevalent in the RPG genre last year, as the overwhelming majority of highest-rated games–according to Metacritic–were either remakes or remasters.

It also looks like that trend will continue well into the future, with 2026 releases like Fatal Frame 2: Fatal Butterfly Remake, Gothic 1 Remake, and Gungrave G.O.R.E. Blood Heat. Looking further ahead, more high-profile remakes include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake, and the recently revealed God of War Remake Trilogy.
