Sophie Turner Injury Halts Tomb Raider TV Series Production

All work on Amazon Prime’s Tomb Raider show have come to a halt for a month, following an injury sustained by Lara Croft herself, Sophie Turner. The severity of the situation depends upon which news sources you trust more. The Sun newspaper in the UK reports that Turner has a long-term back injury, apparently discovered during training for the role a year ago, with a source telling the paper, “It’s been chaos on set and now the whole show is in jeopardy.”

The Sun is not what you might regard as a reliable source of news, and while it might not have a significantly better reputation, Page Six has a far more calm version of the situation. That story says that Turner has in fact suffered a “minor injury,” with production “briefly halted,” and Amazon saying “we look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”

Either way, it seems that Turner has done herself an injury, although the more optimistic Page Six says production has come to a stop for just two weeks.

The Sun‘s apparent source said, “Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the grueling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far.” Its hyperbolic story adds this person saying, “Many on the set fear Sophie may have to be replaced altogether now, as she may not bounce back in time.”

Meanwhile, Page Six links to a SiriusXM story in which Turner acknowledged her back condition in an interview in January this year, but in the more positive context of explaining how she’s built up her fitness for the role. The site also claims the two week stoppage isn’t serious as “crew members will be paid and busy with prep work in the meantime.”

January was when the Game of Thrones actor was announced as taking the lead role in Amazon’s live-action adaptation of the 30-year-old franchise, delighting many fans with the very traditional look of Turner’s outfit, matching Lara’s earliest gaming outings and not the more recent games’ deviations. Last month set photos emerged of the actor in costume, filming in UK woodlands, including doing her own stunts.

It’s obviously hard to know which version of events, if either, is closest to the truth. Turner and Amazon have yet to comment.
