An experimental build of Nvidia‘s DLSS 5 neural rendering technology has leaked online ahead of its official release, giving modders an early opportunity to test the AI-powered graphics feature in existing PC games. Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5 earlier this year as a major step beyond traditional upscaling and frame generation, although demos showing the technology immediately divided players over how much AI should influence a game’s final presentation.
DLSS 5 works differently from many of the features players currently associate with Nvidia’s graphical tech suite. Its neural rendering model can use game information to enhance elements such as lighting, materials, skin, and hair in real time, potentially producing much more detailed images. Nvidia has described the technology as one of its biggest graphics advances since real-time ray tracing, while stressing that developers should maintain control over their artistic direction. Still, early looks at the new tech generated criticism from players who felt some characters looked noticeably different after Nvidia’s AI rendering was applied.

Players can now experiment with an unfinished version of DLSS 5 themselves after files associated with the tech apparently surfaced through the PC version of NBA 2K27. Hardware enthusiast Renan Maniero on Twitter originally discovered an Nvidia library identified as “DLSSNR,” which appears to contain the runtime needed for the new Neural Rendering technology. Soon after, members of the RenoDX modding community began experimenting with the leaked file and eventually got it running in Control. Footage shared online shows users adjusting multiple visual styles and settings while applying the unfinished DLSS 5 tech to Jesse Faden and other parts of the game.

As more people got their hands on the files, fan experiments didn’t stop with Control. Modders have already begun applying the leaked technology to games including Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and The Last of Us Part 2. Results have varied considerably, with some examples showing more detailed skin, clothing, and lighting, while others noticeably change familiar faces. Comparisons involving Cloud and Ellie in particular have attracted attention because the characters look surprisingly different from their original designs. That inconsistency gets to the heart of the Nvidia DLSS 5 controversy, since an enhancement meant to improve fidelity can also start changing the artwork it is supposed to preserve. Many fans feel as if the feature oversteps the developer’s intended artistic direction entirely, or otherwise enters an uncanny valley that isn’t great to look at.
Early testing also suggests Neural Rendering can be extremely demanding in its current form. One test using an RTX 5070 Ti reportedly saw Control fall from around 71 FPS to 35 FPS at 4K after the leaked feature was enabled on character models. However, that result should not be treated as representative of the finished product. Fans should note that DLSS 5 is still not officially released and is being forced into games without official support. As such, Nvidia still has time to optimize the technology before launch. The leaked runtime also currently appears limited to RTX 50 Series GPUs, although that does not necessarily confirm what hardware the final version will support.
For Nvidia, the leak creates an unusual preview of one of its biggest upcoming technologies. DLSS 5 can produce some striking improvements, but aggressive implementations can also change established character designs and carry a substantial performance cost. Nvidia still plans to officially release the technology this fall, so players should treat the leaked build as an unfinished experiment rather than a final verdict and maybe reserve judgment for launch. Even so, PC players are already getting an unexpectedly early look at just how dramatically the future of Nvidia DLSS could change the way games are rendered.
