Obsidian Entertainment Issues New Official Statement on Fallout: New Vegas Sequel

Obsidian Entertainment Issues New Official Statement on Fallout: New Vegas Sequel

Obsidian Entertainment director Josh Sawyer, who was also the project director and lead designer for Fallout: New Vegas, recently gave an official comment on the company and specifically himself working on a sequel to the beloved RPG. Indeed, it’s a question that Obsidian constantly sees online, as many hail Fallout: New Vegas as the best game in the franchise. It’s never a surprise to see it at the top of someone’s best games of all time list, either.

Sawyer’s comments come at an important time for the Fallout franchise, with new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly wanting to invest more in key games and speed up production of certain IPs, with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout specifically mentioned. With Fallout 5 happening after The Elder Scrolls 6, that is a several-year wait for fans (although Fallout 3 and New Vegas remakes are reportedly in the works). Another option, should any exec pursue it, is to have another Fallout game made by another studio ahead of Fallout 5, and because Obsidian has done it before and is under the Xbox umbrella with Bethesda, that just makes sense.

New Fallout Game Reportedly Canceled

A reputable gaming journalist comments on a new, unannounced Fallout game developed by a Microsoft studio apparently being canceled.

Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer Says Fallout: New Vegas Sequel Would Be Decided By “Titans Above” Him

During a recent interview with The 41st Precinct on the Human Can Opener Podcast, Sawyer discussed how he’d find out if he’s making another Fallout game. “These are things that take place above my head, right?” Sawyer stated when asked if Obsidian would be able to make another game in the Fallout franchise or be involved in any way. He’d continue by saying,

“I’m just a director. I’m the studio design director, which is kind of an advisory position to the teams, and then I’m a game director. But there are titans above me who decide what happens with IPs and things like that. It’s not up to me.”

The titans that Sawyer references no doubt refer to major Bethesda figures like Todd Howard and the folks at Xbox, like Sharma or CCO Matt Booty, among others. Sawyer was then asked if one day he’d just wake up and find out that he’s making a Fallout game, which is a simple, if daunting, way to represent the situation, and he responded: “Well, it’s how it happened with New Vegas, so who knows?”

There’s no confirmation here, but it does indicate, seemingly, that Obsidian is open to pursuing a new Fallout game (if it were to be assigned). That said, Obsidian Entertainment has been a powerhouse in recent years for Xbox, so there are its own games to consider both critically and commercially. It has not yet announced a new game, although the Grounded 2 team is still working on new content and releases for it, while Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 reportedly failed to hit key targets. A Fallout game could be both a reward and a challenge, but fans will have to wait for a decree from the bigger titans before that happens.

When and if it does, there are plenty of options to consider. It would not be surprising to see Obsidian return to New Vegas to account for the Amazon series, plus “Fallout: New Vegas 2” would absolutely serve it well marketing-wise. However, there’s a strong case for Obsidian to make the long-rumored Fallout: New Orleans spiritual successor to F:NV, which is a ripe location for the franchise.
