Official New Minecraft Release Confirmed For October 27

Mojang has some exciting news for Nintendo Switch 2 fans, as a dedicated Switch 2 port for Minecraft has just been announced. Said port will utilize every bit of the Nintendo Switch 2’s power to create a better-performing and more visually appealing version of Minecraft, and the new version can be purchased on October 27.

The current version of Minecraft that’s accessible on Nintendo Switch 2 is simply the original Switch version, and it has its fair share of downsides. Microsoft account sign-in errors have been prevalent, performance lag is a constant issue, and the game freezes more often than it does on other consoles. Visually, the game also has some problems, with poor draw distance and chunks sometimes loading in directly in front of players. Compared to playing on a traditional console or something like the Steam Deck, Minecraft on Switch simply hasn’t been an ideal way to play the game, but that should soon be changing thanks to the new Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft that’s been confirmed for October.

Minecraft Java Edition now recommends significantly stronger PC hardware, marking a major shift for one of gaming’s most accessible titles.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 Sounds Like a Much-Needed Upgrade

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft was detailed in an official blog post from Mojang, and it’s confirmed to boast the following features:

  • Vibrant Visuals set as the default experience

    • Enhanced lighting
    • Better shadows
    • Clear visual upgrades
  • Access to Vibrant Visuals enabled content within the marketplace
  • An updated version of the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack

While the blog post does not touch on concepts like load times, frame rate, and stuttering issues that plagued the original Switch version of Minecraft, it can safely be assumed that these problems will no longer exist. After all, if the Switch 2 version is powerful enough to handle the Vibrant Visuals overhaul — not to mention the enhanced shaders available within the marketplace — it’s hard to imagine that the game won’t play significantly better than the previous version.

Currently, it’s unclear if there will be any new content added to the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in the form of skins, music, or locations. All that’s been confirmed is a significant visual overhaul for the special Mario world Mojang created, with the goal being to take full advantage of the Vibrant Visuals improvements. The content, from Peach’s castle to Delfino Plaza, will remain completely exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft.

It’s also worth noting that an upgrade path is confirmed for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2. The price of this upgrade is still under wraps, as Mojang has promised “more details” at a later date. Thus far, Nintendo Switch 2 game upgrades have ranged from $0-20, usually depending on what kind of content is included within the upgrade. If the Minecraft upgrade path were going to be free, though, it can be assumed that Mojang would have said as much in the blog post. Based on the update mainly being a performance overhaul, not to mention the base game being $30 on the original Switch, the upgrade path’s price point falling in the $5 to $10 range would make sense. This is purely speculation, however.

Alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft, fans of the franchise have a fair bit to look forward to. Not only is there a new update dropping later this year that adds an autumn-themed biome to the base game, but Minecraft Dungeons 2 and a sequel to the 2025 film are on the way.
