Overwatch Just Did Something It Hasn’t Done Since 2022

Overwatch Just Did Something It Hasn’t Done Since 2022

Overwatch‘s latest season, Reign of Talon, marks the first time since 2022 that a season’s Week 2 player count was higher than Week 1. Overwatch was met with critical acclaim upon release, even winning the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards. Now over a decade from release, it seems Overwatch may be reaching new heights thanks to its latest season.

Increased competition from games such as Marvel Rivals seemed to light a fire under Blizzard. Blizzard has taken action through a surprise relaunch of Overwatch, which dropped the 2 from the title, implemented huge overall changes, and led to Overwatch officially beating Marvel Rivals in player count. Reign of Talon has already introduced five new heroes, yearly seasonal storylines, and many positive gameplay changes, setting a foundation for consistency in the future.

Overwatch Drops the 2, Confirms 5 New Heroes for Next Week to Kick Off Massive Comeback

Overwatch has announced the new Reign of Talon storyline along with 5 new heroes and a whole set of gameplay changes coming with Season 1 of this arc.

Overwatch Achieves Higher Daily Player Count Than Its Launch Weekend

Following Overwatch‘s comeback season creating a massive player count spike, the game has now achieved a higher daily player count than at its launch weekend. The last time this was achieved was back in 2022 when Overwatch 2 launched, and far before Marvel Rivals hit the scene. Now that Overwatch is achieving these numbers with other high-quality competitors on the market, it goes to show how much fans are loving the Reign of Talon season. This latest season is the first of a multi-chapter arc that will be running throughout 2026.

A huge factor in the success of the season is the new heroes, who have been described as exciting, high-energy, and a breath of fresh air to the game. One of the new heroes, Jetpack Cat, has already become a sort of meme among fans, with the community finding the idea hilarious but the hero effective. The other new heroes include Mizuki, a member of the Hashimoto clan who rivals Hanzo and Genji’s clan, Emre, a hero who used to serve with Soldier 76 and Ana, Talon assistant Domina, and new Overwatch recruit Anran.

Meanwhile, Vendetta has led the charge of the criminal company Talon, who have now taken over the in-universe organization of Overwatch. Our first clue that this would be the new season’s narrative came from Overwatch‘s socials having been taken over by Talon, although where this story will go is unclear.

With Overwatch promising consistent new content and a multi-season story arc as just the initial stages of its relaunch, the momentum might continue for a while longer. Fans are finally happy with the approach the developers are taking to re-establishing Overwatch as the definitive hero-shooter. As seen through the major revisions to gameplay, or Overwatch confirming a character redesign following backlash, the developers are listening to the fans. This sense of community has only been further emphasized through the various updates being implemented and the freebies that Blizzard has been handing out to players, leaving the future of the game shining bright. Overwatch‘s roadmap for the future clearly shows the game has no intentions of slowing down, and it may take another Marvel Rivals-sized game to dethrone the current most popular hero-shooter.
