Paranormal Activity Game Has Been Canceled

Paranormal Activity Game Has Been Canceled

Despite the impressive run that horror gaming has been on in recent years, pumping out powerhouse AAA titles like Resident Evil Requiem and indie darlings like Mouthwashing and more, the highly-anticipated Paranormal Activity: Threshold game has been officially canceled. Paranormal Activity: Threshold joins a growing lineup of video games to be canceled in 2026, though the party responsible for the game’s termination may not be who fans suspect.

First announced in 2024, Paranormal Activity: Threshold was being developed by DarkStone Digital’s Brian Clarke, the indie creator behind the smash-hit supernatural horror game The Mortuary Assistant, and would have featured a found footage experience following a couple who move into a haunted house. Clarke had partnered with publisher DreadXP, as both studios joined forces with cinema conglomerate Paramount, to create the video game adaptation based on the Paranormal Activity film franchise. Unfortunately, Paranormal Activity: Threshold has formally come to an abrupt end, and the reason for the cancellation may be surprising to gaming audiences.

Bodycam Horror Game Looks Absolutely Terrifying

Paranormal Tales is a new first-person bodycam horror game coming later this year that looks absolutely terrifying.

Who Canceled the Paranormal Activity Video?

Brian Clarke shared an announcement on social media revealing that Paranormal Activity: Threshold was officially canceled and confirmed that he was the one to make the call to not release the game. According to Clarke’s statement, he needed more time to work on Paranormal Activity: Threshold to get it to a state that he was happy with, prompting both DarkStone Digital and DreadXP to request an extension on development time from Paramount. Sadly, the film studio “did not agree to extend development,” leaving Clarke to decide if he wanted to rush finishing touches and release the game in its current version or fully cancel it. Clarke opted for the latter, apologizing to fans but thanking Paramount for the opportunity. Brian Clarke noted that he and DreadXP amicably parted ways with Paramount, and he is now looking forward to discovering new horror content that fans can look forward to.

Early audience reactions have voiced disappointment over the canned Paranormal Activity game, particularly among fans of games like The Mortuary Assistant who were excited to see what Brian Clarke could do with a major horror IP. He shared in a comment that the decision is a reflection of why he prefers indie development over AAA. Clarke finds that independent projects have less focus on “rushing to make a deadline,” though he does wish things had gone differently with Paranormal Activity: Threshold. He further noted that it “was an honor to even be considered to work on an IP” that he is so passionate about, and joked that he “may need a small vacation” but plans to make a return to horror sometime in the future.

With so many major games getting canceled left, center, and right, audiences have been pleasantly surprised to see Paranormal Activity: Threshold reaching its end solely due to the decision-making of its developer. Of course, the lack of extended development support from Paramount has received some fan backlash, but Brian Clarke’s follow-up comments have remained optimistic about an eventual “return to form.” Interested gamers can stay tuned for any future updates from Clarke and DarkStone Digital, as well as any new horror games from DreadXP and other indie developers and publishers.
