In The Whispering Valley, players take on the role of a traveler in a rural Quebec village in 1896. It’s a horror game played from the first person and uses its secluded, abandoned village to deliver a folk-horror adventure experience. Players are in this village because of a cryptic letter, which is fitting, and players explore its overgrown homes, decayed paths, and broken-down interiors to discover what happened to its missing inhabitants. In general, players can expect an atmospheric, ambiguous experience delivered via classic point-and-click style puzzle gameplay. The Whispering Valley typically retails at $11.99, but it bears repeating that this giveaway expires on April 28.
Over on Steam, it’s accumulated an interesting “Very Positive” rating from 150+ reviews, 89% of which are positive. Players praise its atmospheric delivery, its completely creepy sound design, its immersive storytelling, and the level of detail in its environments. Its negatives are less called out but potentially include, yet may not be limited to, slow pacing, short playtime (2-4 hours), frequent load screens, and some UI hiccups. Overall, though, it’s considered a short but highly atmospheric indie horror experience, especially for fans of classic adventure games.

That’s a game called The Stone of Madness, which is a real-time tactical stealth game set in a Spanish monastery-turned-prison. In it, five prisoners have to work together (meaning players have a lot of options to juggle). Between a folk horror game, a choice-based Sci-Fi game, a fantasy dungeon management game, and a tactical stealth game, there are some solid free games available this week.
