PC gamers can currently grab 2026 indie RPG Orion the Hero completely free of charge as part of a limited-time promotion. Until August 22, the 2D role-playing game can be claimed for free on PC and added to gaming libraries forever.

Many people believe that PC gaming is particularly expensive. While it’s true that the buy-in cost can be much higher at the point of entry, there is no shortage of free game promotions across multiple platforms for those who want to play without spending much. This is especially true for gamers who are willing to venture outside of Steam to platforms like Epic Games Store and Itch.io, where there are often more free games to be found. For example, Epic Games Store’s current free game is Caravan SandWitch, which can be claimed until August 20.

Orion the Hero is Free to Keep Right Now

A recent announcement on Itch.io from developer Epic Lion Studio confirmed that Orion the Hero is 100% free on the platform until August 22, after which it will return to full price. As with most free games on PC, gamers only have to claim the promotion while it’s active to keep it forever – there is no obligation to install it immediately, meaning that it’s worth grabbing while it’s available. Even those with massive backlogs can simply add Orion the Hero to their gaming library, and come back to it at a later date.

As for the game itself, Orion the Hero is a 2D RPG released in July 2026. Developer Epic Lion Studio touts a “hauntingly beautiful atmosphere,” with “magical battles” and “challenging puzzles.” The role-playing game boasts difficult boss fights and upgrades to be found throughout the playthrough, as well as a story that involves freeing the imprisoned Queen of the Fairy Realm from the vampires. Unfortunately, Orion the Hero doesn’t have any player reviews, but the gameplay certainly looks worth a try for fans of classic 2D role-playing games.

How to Claim Free Games on Itch.io

  • Log in to your Itch.io account (or create a new one).
  • Open the game’s store page.
  • Click the “Download or claim” button.
  • When prompted to donate to the developer, either donate or click “No thanks, just take me to the downloads.” This is completely optional.
  • Download the game files from your Itch.io library.

The benefit of finding free games on platforms like Itch.io is obvious. These games are usually developed by much smaller studios, with tiny budgets. As a result, these titles will often take more creative risks that bigger studios simply can not afford to do. This can result in some extremely unique games. Maybe not everything will work, but it’s guaranteed that there will be something unique to help it stand out from the crowd, which is often what’s missing from many modern AA and AAA titles.
