PC gamers have a limited time to download and claim a 100% DRM-free 2D platforming game from 2022 at absolutely no charge, and while it is not the most complex game in the world, the game in question—Mr. Brocco & Co. Against Fast Food, or just Mr. Brocco & Co.—is entertaining for a limited time. After all, the Steam version of the PC game has 90% positive reviews.

However, it’s worth noting this free game giveaway is not part of Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion, nor is it available via Steam. IndieGala, an Italian digital storefront for PC game sales and bundles, often gives away small-scale indie games for a limited time, and that’s exactly the scope of Mr. Brocco & Co. But what’s even better is that it’s DRM-free, so anyone can download, copy, and back up the game file without needing any special validation software. Once you claim it for free, it’s entirely yours to keep forever.

Usually costing $9.99, Mr.Brocco & Co is a retro-style 2D platformer that mixes classic arcade gameplay with a food-themed premise, with there being an “edutainment” element that’s supposed to be about eating healthily. Players step into the shoes of Mr. Broccoli or Super Asparagus to explore the world, engage in side-scrolling gameplay, and fight through enemies based on junk food. Developer VICTORIA Games claims old-school platformers like the classic Super Mario games as inspiration, and while that’s obvious to a degree, there’s more of a bright, comic-esque cartoon visual to it.

Over on Steam, Mr. Brocco & Co is sitting at a 90% Positive rating (from 21 reviews). Many seem to enjoy the art and gameplay loop, but it’s not without criticism. The experience is dragged down by how quickly it becomes repetitive, how limited it is mechanics-wise, and how short it is overall. Many also feel the edutainment aspect is weak, even for children. At a $10 retail price, that makes some sense, but thanks to Indie Gala, players can claim it for free right now. A simple retro-inspired platformer at the cost of free is still not a deal to pass up on.

What’s More, Mr. Brocco and Co. is not the only game available for free on IndieGala right now. VICTORIA Games’ entire platforming collection is, so if someone enjoys Mr. Brocco, then it’s worth checking out Brave Little Cloud and Carlos the Taco. There’s clearly a theme here, but Mr. Brocco is the oldest of the bunch. As such, users can expect an evolution of the core formula in later games.

And while these games are not for everyone, some fans might enjoy them. Brave Little Cloud is the most child-oriented of them, though all are far from an M rating, but they are okay-to-solid PC games to claim and play for free.
