As Marvel’s Wolverine draws closer, the online discourse is starting to ramp up, and much of that has been centered around the creative liberties that Insomniac Games is taking with the comic lore. Marvel’s Wolverine shows a different side to Logan’s story, and with that comes a variety of other bold changes. As a longtime Wolverine and Marvel Comics fan, Marvel’s Wolverine is the type of game I’ve been wanting to happen for years. Now that it’s almost here, I keep noticing online debates about whether the game is changing too many story elements of the more traditional comic narratives.
Those who have been wanting a Wolverine story based on the Earth-616 universe might not find what they’re looking for with Marvel’s Wolverine‘s story, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. There are a few key parallels with the Earth-616 universe, but some of the more specific details have been reworked. Insomniac Games is telling an original story, and the various changes being made will ultimately make for a more compelling narrative. This is a risky move on Insomniac’s part, but it’s a chance worth taking.
Insomniac Games Is Making Sweeping Lore Changes in Marvel’s Wolverine, and I’m Here for It
There have been several Marvel’s Wolverine controversies leading up to the game’s launch. Between some being unhappy with Logan’s character design, Jean Grey being unplayable, and even threats of a boycott to send a message to Sony regarding the company’s plans to stop making physical games after 2028, Marvel’s Wolverine has had a tough go of it over the past few weeks.
The changes to Marvel Comics lore could prove to be some of the most controversial decisions of all, though. There are plenty of great Wolverine comic storylines out there, but Insomniac wants to bring a new take on Logan and the other X-Men universe characters to life. Whether it’s the movies, comic books, or even past video games, a lot of Marvel fans have plenty of preconceived ideas about what a Wolverine-led story should be, and the team at Insomniac also have their own ideas of what would make for an interesting Logan chapter.
Biggest Liberties Marvel’s Wolverine Takes With the Comic Lore
- The story takes place in a world where the X-Men haven’t been formed yet. Mutants are still not accepted in most of the world, so they’re forced into a life of hiding.
- Since Cyclops is out of the picture, the game is teasing a more obvious romantic relationship between Jean Grey and Logan.
- Jean Grey is a full-grown adult before she ever joins the X-Men (assuming this story will lead to an X-Men game).
- Team X is not a government-controlled black ops group.
Team X might end up being one of the riskiest changes in Marvel’s Wolverine. In Earth-616, Team X is shown as a more sinister force that brainwashes mutants to do the CIA’s bidding in black ops operations. However, in Marvel’s Wolverine, Team X is an underground group that work to rescue other mutants. Considering that the main Marvel’s Wolverine villains have a history with Logan while working together on Team X, Insomniac is setting up a potentially fascinating dynamic.
Even though Sony has announced plans to eventually stop disc production and major games like GTA 6 won’t feature a disc in the game’s physical copy, Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine‘s physical version will indeed include an actual disc in the box.
Since this version of Team X doesn’t involve controlling the minds of mutants, every character is going to have agency, which is where much of the conflict is bound to come from. This allows Marvel’s Wolverine characters, like Sabretooth and Mystique, to be more complex and find their morals caught in more of a gray area than something as black and white as mind control to do the CIA’s bidding. This take on Team X sounds more like a proto-X-Men, so it’s going to be interesting to see if this group sets the stage for an X-Men game by the end of Marvel’s Wolverine‘s story.
Marvel’s Wolverine Isn’t the First Time That Insomniac Games Has Deviated From Earth-616
Marvel’s Wolverine takes place in Insomniac’s very own universe (Earth-1048). It gives the developer a blank slate to tell the kind of story that the team wants to. Earth-1048 offers plenty of creative freedom when it comes to storytelling, but it also leaves enough buffers to keep characters from straying too far from their original versions. The personalities and abilities of characters like Logan and Peter Parker remain intact, but Insomniac can play around with the overarching narratives.
Insomniac changing so much of the X-Men universe lore isn’t surprising. This has already been done plenty with the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, so it’s interesting to see so much debate about Marvel’s Wolverine doing the same thing. Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ lives are significantly different than their Earth-616 counterparts.
Biggest Liberties Marvel’s Spider-Man Takes With the Comic Lore
- Otto Octavius is Peter Parker’s mentor before becoming an enemy.
- MJ is an investigative reporter for the Daily Bugle instead of a model and actress.
- Venom is Harry Osborne instead of Eddie Brock.
- Miles Morales’ father is dead. Both of his parents are living in Earth-616.
- J. Jonah Jameson is a podcast shock-jock instead of solely being the Daily Bugle manager.
- Peter Parker already has years of experience when the first game starts.
- Kraven’s motivation stems from a terminal illness instead of purely ego.
These are pretty significant changes from the usual Spider-Man story, but they work quite well. In some cases, they actually add more depth to characters, like Kraven and MJ. Even Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows for a more complex, conflicting storyline that briefly strains Peter and Harry’s relationship.
I’m not saying that Earth-616 has inferior storytelling or anything. It’s just that these stories have been told before. Marvel’s Wolverine having big lore changes can be just as useful as Insomniac fast-forwarding past the Peter Parker origin story that people have seen retold over and over again. Showing a new side of a character keeps things new and exciting, and that’s ultimately a good thing.
