Persona 6’s Official Platforms Reveal Skips the One Console It Needs Most

Persona 6’s Official Platforms Reveal Skips the One Console It Needs Most

While we don’t know much about it at this point, we do know that Persona 6 is coming to all platforms at some point in the near future, potentially in 2027. Well, it’s coming to all platforms bar one: Atlus’ June 2026 Persona 6 announcement makes it clear that it’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (included in Game Pass, to boot), and PC, but says nothing about the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.

This is a bit suspect, especially when you consider factors like the existing JRPG community on Switch 2 and the overwhelming popularity of the Persona franchise as a whole. In fact, there are already a number of Persona games available within Nintendo’s current hardware ecosystem, including Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload, the series’ two most recent entries. Why exactly the horror-coded Persona 6 hasn’t been announced for the Switch 2 is anyone’s guess, but I can only hope that Atlus is able to bring it to the platform sooner rather than later, as the alternative would contradict the company’s broader approach to multi-platform releases.

Persona 5 Royal: The Best Romances, Ranked

Persona 5 has a bevy of romance options, some better than others. Today, we’re checking out the best ones.

Persona 6 Is a Weird Interruption of Atlus’ Cross-Platform Release Strategy

Like a lot of JRPG studios, Atlus had an intimate and exclusive publishing relationship with Sony for much of its early life. The first game in the Persona franchise released in 1996 exclusively for the PlayStation 1, and this trend would continue until the 2010s, when spin-off games like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and the Persona Q duology were released on Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS, respectively. This corresponded with the purchase of Atlus by SEGA in 2014, which presumably resulted in more resources and greater ambitions for the developer.

Still, no mainline Persona game came to a non-Sony platform until 2020, when Atlus surprise-launched Persona 4 Golden, a remastered version of 2008’s Persona 4, on Steam. Atlus may have experienced its own sense of surprise when the game sold like hotcakes, prompting additional ports to other platforms in 2023. The prior year saw the release of Persona 5 Royal on non-Sony systems, including the original Nintendo Switch.

Atlus would go on to expand its games’ availability on other consoles and PC, not only with remasters of older PlayStation exclusives (e.g. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army), but also new, original titles (e.g. Metaphor: Refantazio). With the exception of Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is coming to the Switch 2 in November 2026, Atlus has brought all of its most popular releases to Nintendo hardware. This makes it even stranger that Persona 6, which is a more high-profile release than P3R or Metaphor, hasn’t been confirmed for the Switch 2 yet.

Persona 6 Is the Perfect Third-Party JRPG for the Nintendo Switch 2

Aside from Atlus’ demonstrated desire to bring its franchises to more platforms, including those from Nintendo, Persona 6‘s apparent absence on Switch 2 (for now) is strange for another reason: it’s the ideal game for Nintendo’s hybrid console. For one thing, Atlus’ games aren’t exactly known for being technically demanding. When a big third-party AAA game comes to the Switch 2, there are valid concerns that should be raised about how it might look and run on the pared-down console, but this shouldn’t apply to Persona 6 unless Atlus is planning an unprecedented jump in visuals or scope. It probably won’t be like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Switch 2, which is a serviceable, but still noticeably inferior, version of the game.

Additionally, the Persona formula is arguably at its best when played on a handheld device. Ignoring the 3DS exclusives, which were intentionally designed with handhelds in mind, games like Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload play beautifully on a Switch 2 or Steam Deck. Not only are they smooth-running and sharp-looking due to the aforementioned low hardware requirements, but their iconic gameplay loops are ideal for short bursts. Turn-based battles, dungeon crawling, quick-and-dirty mini-games, and slice-of-life visual novel passages are all satisfying in and of themselves, so taking a short break with these games while lying in bed, riding the train, or staying in a hotel, is always more convenient on a handheld device.

Atlus’ games aren’t exactly known for being technically demanding.

And let’s not forget the already sizable community of JRPG players on the Switch and Switch 2. There are the previously mentioned Atlus RPGs, but also the various Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter Stories, and Kingdom Hearts entries that have found a comfortable home on Nintendo’s platform. Actually, two of the biggest and most critically acclaimed JRPG franchises, Pokemon and Xenoblade Chronicles, are exclusive to Nintendo consoles. I would actually argue that the Nintendo Switch 2 is, at the very least, a much more fertile ecosystem for JRPGs than the Xbox Series X|S. Thus, it is rather confusing that Xbox is a confirmed Persona 6 platform, and not the Switch or Switch 2.

If Persona 6 Doesn’t Come to the Nintendo Switch 2 at Some Point, I’ll Eat My Hat

I want to be clear that I’m not saying Persona 6 will not come to the Switch 2 in the future. If anything, I’m saying the opposite. Persona 6 is an obvious choice for the Nintendo Switch 2, so the fact that it’s the only major platform omitted from the game’s early marketing is extremely strange. It’s hard to know what happens behind closed doors at companies like Nintendo, SEGA, and Atlus, but you would imagine that a day-and-date release of Persona 6, a game that will surely sell millions of copies, on the Switch 2, a console that has already sold in abundance, would be a no-brainer.

Persona 6 Just Got an Encouraging Update

Brand-New Persona 6 Story Details Confirmed by PlayStation Store

Right now, it seems like Atlus is sending the message that Persona 6 may arrive on the Switch 2 sometime after its initial global release. This isn’t as bad as not releasing on the console at all, obviously, but it’s still disappointing. I’m sure that there are very good reasons why Atlus would take this route, but relegating the Switch 2 to this sort of second-class position is certainly an unexpected move, given the success of the first Switch.
