The EA Sports PGA Tour franchise was once an annual release that reminded golf fans of Tiger Woods’ influence by featuring him on the cover for over a decade. EA’s golf series was even once titled Tiger Woods PGA Tour, but a new heavy hitter has become the clear choice to kick EA Sports PGA Tour back into gear.

EA Sports PGA Tour launched back in 2023 as a live service title, and while the game was received pretty well by golf fans, it has since been left lying dormant. Like many games published by the company, EA Sports PGA Tour is on the list of games EA has stopped supporting. The game is still playable, but its community widely considers this the end of the road. However, EA properly capitalizing on Rory McIlroy’s success and his status as the new Tiger Woods could help the series bounce back.

New Steam Co-Op Game With ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ Reviews is a Cross Between Golf and Peak

A brand new co-op game on Steam is gaining popularity, and it looks just like a wild crossover between golf and Peak.

Rory McIlroy’s Epic Career is What EA’s PGA Series Needs

If Rory McIlroy were to be used as the next major face of EA’s PGA Tour games, it wouldn’t be the first time. McIlroy got a taste of the Tiger Woods treatment back in 2015 when his namesake was used to promote that year’s entry instead of Woods’ likeness. It was the first time since 1999 that Tiger Woods wasn’t featured as the main selling point, marking a new era for the entire sport of golf and the game franchise. The Tiger Woods-led games were some of the best golf games of the 2000s, and McIlroy taking the stage was an exciting new beginning.

Unfortunately, McIlroy’s time as EA’s golf cover star was short-lived. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour was only a one-time entry. EA seemingly abandoned the series until 2023’s EA Sports PGA Tour. So much time has passed since McIlroy’s cover debut that EA shut down Rory McIlroy PGA Tour back in 2025.

Rory McIlroy’s Career is Worth EA’s Attention

Golf lovers and even broader sports fans are more than likely aware of the great run that McIlroy has had through the years. This year in particular has been pretty strong for the golfer. Back at the Masters in April, McIlroy won by a single stroke. This makes him the fourth person to ever have back-to-back wins at the tournament. With EA’s main competitor being the PGA Tour 2K series, McIlroy’s status as a golf legend presents the chance for some actual competition to happen in the golf gaming niche. If EA doesn’t jump at the chance, then 2K should.

Rory McIlroy has never been featured as a 2K cover star.

As great as it would be to see Rory McIlroy return as EA’s cover star, the publisher has yet to make any announcements about a new EA Sports PGA Tour game. Right now, it looks like EA may have left its golf series behind for the time being. On the bright side, EA Sports PGA Tour hasn’t been shut down by EA yet. Only time will tell if the company decides to bring another golf game back into the spotlight. If it does, then putting Rory McIlroy on the cover is the obvious decision.
