The biggest upgrade coming to Pikmin 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 may have little to do with how its tiny world looks. Releasing November 12, 2026, Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy promises improved visuals, voice commands for Oatchi, and expanded GameShare support. These are welcome additions, but the new Dandori Academy mode could change how players engage with the adventure long after the credits roll.
There are 72 Academy stages planned, with six arriving each month, but the release schedule is only part of the appeal. Nintendo is also adding weekend exams, online rankings, and rewards for players who sharpen their Dandori skills. For anyone who has finished Pikmin 4 and moved on, this creates a reason to return without starting another campaign. It could give the single-player adventure a longer life, with players’ improvement providing the momentum.
Dandori Academy Gives Pikmin 4 Players a Weekly Reason to Return
Dandori has always been at the heart of Pikmin 4. Its challenges test how efficiently players can organize Pikmin and transport treasure before time runs out. Success often comes down to small decisions, like finding a faster route or having Oatchi handle one task while the squad works elsewhere. Dandori Battles introduce competition, while the Trial of the Sage Leaf pushes these skills especially hard. Still, these activities can eventually feel finished once players have earned their desired medals. Dandori Academy gives that familiar pursuit a new structure, encouraging players to revisit challenges and improve their results. The difference between clearing a stage and mastering its best route suddenly becomes more compelling.

According to Nintendo, Academy stages can be practiced without limits, but exams take place from Friday through Sunday, with one official attempt allowed per week under the standard rules. Medals earned through exams unlock rewards, while online leaderboards let players compare their results. There are also three difficulty levels, making the mode approachable for newcomers. Players can spend the week refining their strategies before testing their preparation in an official attempt. The next exam then becomes an opportunity to improve, giving familiar challenges a longer sense of progression.
Dandori Academy could give Pikmin 4 something its original challenges lacked: a recurring reason to return and put those hard-earned skills to the test.
Nintendo has experimented with recurring skill competitions before. Super Mario Maker 2 introduced Ninji Speedruns, featuring Nintendo-designed courses where players compete for faster completion times. Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition follows a similar approach, rotating five weekly challenges and comparing players’ performances. Dandori Academy shares this competitive appeal, but Pikmin 4 gives the format a different home. Players originally came to its 2023 release for an adventure built around exploration, rescuing castaways, and gathering treasure. Adding a competitive calendar to that experience makes its existing mechanics feel fresh again.

The campaign can still reach a natural ending, while optional challenges reward players who want to keep mastering its systems. This approach could work for other Nintendo adventures, too. Super Mario Odyssey, for example, already features Koopa Freerunning, which challenges players to race through familiar kingdoms. A rotating schedule of competitive challenges could give that activity a similar appeal, although Nintendo has announced no such plans. Still, the optional nature of Dandori Academy is encouraging. Players can enjoy the original adventure at their own pace, while dedicated fans have something to work toward after finishing it.
Pikmin 4’s Best Switch 2 Upgrade Could Be a Reason to Return
The most exciting thing about Pikmin 4’s Switch 2 Edition might be the possibility that a completed adventure can still have something meaningful left to offer. Dandori Academy takes a system that already rewards careful planning and gives players a recurring incentive to improve. With new stages arriving monthly and exams available on weekends, returning players can measure their progress without waiting for another story expansion.
I would love to see Nintendo explore this approach with more of its single-player games, especially those that already have challenges worth revisiting. Dandori Academy won’t appeal to everyone, but it gives dedicated players something to work toward without changing what made Pikmin 4 enjoyable in the first place. Better graphics will certainly make the game prettier on Nintendo Switch 2, but a reason to keep playing could prove to be the upgrade that lasts.
