PlayStation 6 Handheld Leak Teases the Device’s Power

PlayStation 6 Handheld Leak Teases the Device’s Power

Apparent leaks about the next generation of PlayStation hardware suggest that the PS6 will include a powerful handheld model. The tease comes as PlayStation’s latest console, the PS5, draws closer to its sixth year of availability.

The PS5 has been massively successful since its launch in November 2020. The console, which was released in both digital-only and disc-enabled formats, has become the default hardware of this generation, with a library of software that is continuously expanding in both scale and quality. As of March 2026, the PlayStaion 5 is outselling its most fierce competition once again, managing to outpace the more recently released Nintendo Switch 2 in spite of Nintendo’s own success in the hardware market. Although recent reports suggest that the major powers of the games industry are looking ahead to a new console generation, the current consoles available on the market do not appear to be running out of steam.

If PlayStation 6 Leaks Are True, The PS5 Pro May Pale in Comparison

Rumors and leaks allegedly give insight to the power and pricing of the PlayStation 6, being a stark contrast to what fans have seen with the PS5 Pro.

Insider Hints At the Power of the PlayStation 6’s Handheld Model

Sega Sales Data Shows Harmful Effect of Sony Exclusivity

A notable insider has suggested that the handheld version of the PlayStation 6 will play host to some impressive specs. In a post on gaming forum NeoGAF, prominent industry insider KeplerL2 has stated that the PlayStation 6’s long-rumored handheld model will outperform the Xbox Series S, suggesting that the portable iteration of Sony’s next hardware generation will host a GPU that’s “a bit ahead” of Microsoft’s home console while “massively” outpacing the Series S in terms of ray tracing and path tracing. KeplerL2 also states that the handheld’s updated version of PSSR, which allows PlayStation hardware to upscale its graphical performance, will be better than Nvidia’s current market-leading DLSS 4.5 technology. This presents a significant jump from the Nintendo Switch 2, which currently utilizes its own version of DLSS 2.

Rumors about the PlayStation 6 have been circulating for quite some time, with many suggesting that Sony would re-enter the portable console market in its next iteration of hardware. Unlike Sony’s PlayStation Portal, which allows PlayStation 5 owners to utilize the console’s Remote Play features or stream their library of games via the cloud, the portable PS6 is rumored to stand as a traditional handheld experience, boasting the same library of titles as its home console counterpart. This would be Sony’s first true handheld device since the PlayStation Vita, which was released in 2011 in Japan and 2012 elsewhere in the world. Though the Vita was well received by enthusiasts, developing a cult following among PlayStation fans, the console’s poor sales prompted Sony to limit support for the handheld, officially discontinuing the portable device in 2019.

With Sony significantly raising the price of all PS5 models due to the current climate of console manufacturing costs, a more affordable portable PS6 seems to be a perfect compromise for fans who would like to upgrade to the next generation of hardware as soon as possible. Technology is rapidly growing more expensive, but it’s also become overwhelmingly powerful. While a portable version of a home console is sure to compromise some level of performance, these rumors suggest that the drop-off in quality is likely less significant than ever. Many fans would likely be willing to compromise on performance or graphical fidelity if it meant they were able to buy into the next console generation at a reduced cost.

Despite the likelihood that a handheld PlayStation 6 would serve as a more cost-effective version of Sony’s upcoming console generation, the exact price is yet to be determined. Many analysts predict that the PS6 may cost $1,000 or more, and although it would likely be cheaper, a portable iteration of the system may still come with a substantial price tag attached. If the rumored hardware is as powerful as insiders have predicted, it will likely be costly as well. Fans should prepare to pay a premium price if they’d like to jump into the next generation of PlayStation hardware at launch,
