PlayStation CEO Comments on Future Hardware

While there are more ways to play video games than ever before, PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to dedicated console hardware while stating that future hardware could take different forms. PlayStation has seen some notable non-console hardware launches, including the PS Portal and PS cloud gaming services.

As bizarre as it may sound, the industry is already shifting its focus to the next generation of consoles, and all eyes are on Sony to see what it plans to do with the PS6. As of now, Xbox has stated that Project Helix will be a hybrid console, allowing players to enjoy their PC library alongside their Xbox exclusives. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 has doubled down on the first Switch’s strengths, while Valve is tossing its hat in the ring with the new Steam Machine, which could introduce console gamers to the PC market. The industry is certainly changing, not just in how to play, but also in rising manufacturing costs, leading many to question whether Sony even intends to make the PS6 a dedicated console.

Sony Quietly Removed My Favorite Thing About PlayStation 5 Games

Although there is no official announcement, it sounds like Sony is pulling the plug on my favorite thing about PS5 games.

PlayStation CEO Confirms It Will Continue Making Consoles, but New Ways to Play Are Coming

In a recent interview with Famitsu, PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino was asked about the company continuing to develop consoles as its main business model in the future, and the executive responded by reaffirming that this will be the case, but acknowledged that the industry is shifting how gamers play. Nishino believes that having a console hooked up to a television with something ready to play when someone presses the power button is crucial to the gaming experience, so that aspect of the business is going nowhere. However, not all gamers want to play their console games on the TV, which is why PlayStation is introducing monitors, cloud gaming, and handheld devices like the PS Portal to provide more flexibility in how gamers play. Nishino states that the company would like to continue to explore these types of products so that gaming can fit into any lifestyle.

“The idea that you need a game console in order to play the game does not change. On top of that, the reason why we make a game machine is because I think it is important to play the game when you turn on the power as an experience. From this point of view, I would like to continue to provide our own game consoles.” – Hideaki Nishino (Famitsu)

Recent years have certainly seen PlayStation branch out from its traditional console model with varying degrees of success. 2023’s PlayStation Portal has been the most notable hit for the company, exceeding Sony’s initial expectations, with 7% of all PS5 owners owning a Portal. Meanwhile, PlayStation’s Cloud Streaming on PS Plus Premium remains somewhat of a mixed bag, with many fans on Reddit and Twitter saying they hardly use it. Then there are the PlayStation-branded InZone monitors that have barely made a splash in the small-screen gaming market. How PlayStation intends to expand these markets remains to be seen.

“In the future, if you think about the experience of a new game machine while utilizing technology that can be used in various shapes and various places, I think you can create something interesting.” – Hideaki Nishino (Famitsu)

With the PS6 on the horizon, many fans are concerned about what the future holds for the device if it really will be a dedicated console. Industry trends like disc drives being phased out have made many fans wary that the PS6 will have no way to play physical media, especially considering that massive games like GTA 6 ship with no discs at all, at the moment. Otherwise, fans are concerned that cloud gaming could become a bigger focus for Sony, as manufacturing costs have skyrocketed and margins on dedicated gaming hardware have begun to shrink.

There is no telling what is coming for the PS6 yet, but so far, things aren’t looking shaky. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has already discussed the PS6, stating that current market conditions will affect when the console launches and the price point at which the company intends to sell it, adding to the volatility that comes with releasing tech in today’s market. What is certain is that Sony still fully intends to launch the PS6 as a dedicated console, but so far, everything else seems to be under wraps and at the mercy of current market trends.
