Sony announces a brand-new update for the PS Portal remote player, continuing to evolve and build the experience for PlayStation players whether they’re using it for Remote Play or as a cloud streaming device. The PlayStation Portal has continued to evolve since its original launch back in 2023. Even though it isn’t a return to the old PSP days,
Despite continued calls for a true standalone PlayStation handheld device, similar to the PSP back in the day, the Portal has proven to be a big hit for Sony. Thanks to that sales success, Sony has continued to evolve the handheld over the past couple of years, improving the overall experience with new features, like Cloud Streaming, and other highly requested enhancements. With the latest update finally here, it appears that Sony has no intention of slowing down with continuing to evolve this handheld device.
PlayStation Reveals New Controller That Has Fans Scratching Their Heads
PlayStation promotes a new controller, which has left many fans scratching their heads following a major report that emerged just days ago.
PS Portal March 17, 2026 Update Features
In a new blog post, Sony’s Senior Manager of Product Management, Takuro Fushimi, revealed all the details on the newest PlayStation Portal update. It’s been a few months since the last PS Portal update, with that one finally adding a cloud streaming option for users, allowing them to stream games either when the PS5 console is in use by another person or when on the go and using high-speed Wi-Fi. While that previous update also featured some other enhancements, such as a redesigned UI for the home screen and 3D audio support, this March update continues to build out the streaming side of the device with additional enhancements.
High Quality Mode
In this update, Remote Play and Cloud Streaming users now have a new visual option to pick. 1080p High Quality mode gives players a higher bitrate option while playing games compared to the traditional standard mode, adding a smoother and more high fidelity experience. It should be noted that selecting this option will use more data due to the higher video quality and will largely depend on the quality of the network connection. Players can enable the option from the following settings:
- From Quick Menu, select Max Resolution and then 1080p High Quality mode.
- Make sure to select “Apply and Restart” to save the change. Keep in mind, this will force the session to restart to enable the changes.
Cloud Streaming Improvements
Next up are continued quality of life improvements made to the Cloud Streaming option for the PlayStation Portal. While the mode does require a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription in order to be used, Sony has added a handful of new enhancements to “improve usability and reduce friction” during sessions. These include:
- Improved Product Detail Page – Selecting Steam on the product page of a bundle will display a page where users can select a specific game to play.
- Game Invites – While streaming a supported game, game invites will now appear in a clear on-screen notification.
- Enhanced Trophy Notifications – Similarly, unlocked Trophy notifications now clearly display the name and associated image. In addition, Platinum Trophies now feature their unique animation when unlocked.
- Improved Search – Sony has also improved the search interface, including the On Screen Keyboard appearing immediately when going into the search.
Onboarding Experience Enhancements
The final piece of this update relates to the handheld’s onboarding experience. Specifically, Sony has attempted to make the process easier for those jumping in without a preexisting PlayStation account. While there has been plenty of controversy around the need for a PlayStation Account, especially on the PC side of things, the Portal now features a QR code that can be scanned from a mobile device to help make a new account quickly.

The post also highlighted how popular the addition of Cloud Streaming has been for the Portal. Since the November 2025 update, Cloud Streaming users grew by 162% year-over-year. As part of that, over 50% of Portal users upgraded to PlayStation Plus Premium to take advantage of the Cloud Streaming option, a figure that has no doubt pleased Sony and likely a big reason why the company continues to improve the handheld for its growing base of players.
