PlayStation’s Biggest Disc Producing Site Is Already Being Repurposed

PlayStation’s Biggest Disc Producing Site Is Already Being Repurposed

A gamer would have to be living under a rock to not have heard about PlayStation’s controversial decision to stop producing discs. And while players were assured they’ll still be able to pick up games physically for a few more years, PlayStation’s main production facility for physical copies reducing output is a reminder that the end is nigh.

Though it’s long been expected that the digital-only future was inevitable, that doesn’t mean that gamers have been pleased to finally see it approaching. Some gamers distrust companies when it comes to their digital collections, citing examples like Sony’s removal of hundreds of movies from gamers’ libraries as proof that digitally owned products can be snatched away at a moment’s notice. While the media company tied to these projects was ultimately to blame for the removal, it was still bad optics for the PlayStation brand, especially with the poorly timed announcement that physical game copies would be retired come January 2028.

While many gamers weren’t paying any attention to PlayStation’s disc-production plants until this news dropped, as soon as it did, it didn’t take long for people to start sleuthing around. Before long, Insider Gaming corroborated a report from Austrian website ORF.at that stating that, while Sony previously produced 600,000 discs every single day at its Thalgau plant, this number is beginning to shrink significantly day-by-day. Despite accounting for 50% of the plant’s work load, it’s expected that this percentage will dwindle to 10% by the 2028 disc cutoff. A rough estimate based on these percentages would suggest that the daily disc count is planned to shrink from 600,000 to 240,000.

While the 300 employees working at this factory will fortunately be keeping their jobs, as the plant will attempt to fill the void by producing the micro optics used in smartphones, hospital machinery, and so on, it’s very clear that the abandonment of discs is in full effect. Some gamers likely hoped that the severe backlash to Sony would result in the company walking back its decision, but it certainly seems like that is not going to be possible, as the company’s main site for disc-production is already pursuing other avenues of work.

Naturally, gamers have been quick to point out how strange it’s going to be to have collected physical copies of an entire long-running series, only for that lineup to suddenly fall off as new entries are released. Players collecting every entry of the Resident Evil franchise, for instance, are preparing themselves for the Veronica remake to be the last physical copy of a Resident Evil game that they ever buy. Outside of preservation efforts, there is a sizable subset of gamers that simply prefers having large physical collections to look at and appreciate, and this group is being forced to embrace the all-digital future because of PlayStation’s decision.

At the same time, a majority of game sales on PlayStation 5 are digital according to reports, so many players may be indifferent to this shift. Regardless, it’s going to take some getting used to, as store shelves being lined with (full) video game cases has become a visual that many players have permanently engraved into their minds.
