Pokemon Champions Issues Apology

Pokemon Champions Issues Apology

The developers of Pokemon Champions have apologized for early problems with the Nintendo Switch game, in a statement that also addresses known issues that will be resolved. A free-to-start game, Pokemon Champions draws inspiration from titles like Pokemon Stadium, allowing for both casual and ranked battles online. Thanks to Pokemon Home connectivity, players can bring in teams of Pokemon that have been trained in the mainline games, or they can rent and obtain new ones.

Pokemon Champions could be a big deal for the franchise. After debuting on Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Champions will be ported to mobile platforms later this year. For the first time, this will allow players to participate in the franchise’s traditional turn-based battles, even if they don’t own a Nintendo system. That should open up Pokemon‘s competitive scene to a much bigger pool of players, including those who exclusively play mobile games like Pokemon GO.

Known Issues in Pokemon Champions

  • The description for Leech Seed is incorrect
  • Order problems when two Pokemon Mega Evolve in the same turn
  • Incorrect genders for Pokemon like Gallade
  • Issues with the Lightning Rod ability during an Encore state
  • Problems with move selection when viewing details and the cursor hovers over the Mega Evolution option

The Pokemon Company has apologized for early problems with Pokemon Champions, while sharing details about problems that will be resolved in the near future. These range from minor problems, like Gallade’s gender appearing incorrectly, to more significant issues, like specific abilities not working the way that they’re supposed to. There are also incorrect move descriptions, which could throw off players.

Pokemon Champions will become the central hub for Pokemon VGC events this year, replacing Scarlet and Violet in competitive play. For that reason, the developers are going to have to act quickly to make sure that bugs are minimal. It’s not unusual for a live-service game to have some issues during the launch window, but these problems could cause major headaches for competitive players. The VGC community has put a lot of time and effort into training for competitive events, and it’s imperative that things go as smoothly as possible. Passionate competitive players are a big part of the franchise’s success, and The Pokemon Company does not want to push them away because of avoidable problems.

Bugs and launch issues have been a source of frustration for Pokemon fans over the last few years. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had significant problems at launch, and Game Freak continued to polish the games for nearly three years after. The last thing anyone wants is a repeat of that situation. The Pokemon Company seems to have taken the negative feedback to Scarlet and Violet very seriously, but the early issues with Pokemon Champions could similarly hurt the game’s perception.

The Pokemon franchise has had a lot of positive publicity over the last few months. Pokemon Pokopia has been a huge success on Nintendo Switch 2, and the re-releases of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen seem to be attracting a lot of players. It remains to be seen whether Pokemon Champions can overcome its early issues, but there’s a lot of potential for it to grow into a major attraction for both casual and competitive fans. Hopefully the developers can overcome these early growing pains and help Pokemon Champions achieve its potential.
