Pokemon Champions Nintendo Switch Release Date is Now Official

Nintendo has now officially confirmed the release date for Pokemon Champions on Nintendo Switch, which will be arriving on April 8, 2026. While monster-catching fans will have to wait until 2027 for the beginning of generation 10, Pokemon Champions will be arriving much sooner for Nintendo Switch, with a solid release date for its iOS and Android versions still waiting for a release date announcement.

Pokemon Champions was first announced in February 2025, with its reveal trailer included as part of that year’s Pokemon Day Pokemon Presents live stream event. The upcoming title will focus specifically on battles between Pokemon in an arena-like setting, making players rely on careful strategy and knowledge of series staples like type advantages, abilities, and status effects in order to secure victory over their opponents. Fans who have been following Pokemon Champions‘ development have already made some comparisons to the old Pokemon Stadium games from the days of the N64, and the upcoming game seems to hold a lot of appeal for Pokemon fans who hold competitive battles above all else.

Pokemon Champions Will Break a 16-Year Tradition

Pokemon Champions is set to end a tradition that has been part of the franchise since 2009, a move that could reshape competitive matches forever.

Now, a post on the official Pokemon webiste’s news page confirms that Pokemon Champions will be launching worldwide on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026. The game will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2, and while there is no official Switch 2 version, a free update will be available for owners of Nintendo’s newest console, which will provide the game with a graphical upgrade over the original Switch. Additionally, a mobile version of the game is in the works, and while no release date is available at this time, Nintendo has confirmed that once it arrives, players will be able to engage in Pokemon battles with one another regardless of what platform they’re playing on.

There will be multiple different game modes and ways to battle in Pokemon Champions, providing variety in its gameplay. Game modes include ranked, casual, and private battles, and players will be able to choose whether they want to participate in single or double battles. Additionally, the game will feature special online competitions, pitting players in matches with special sets of rules that will be different in each season. Participating in battles will earn players Victory Points, which can be applied to Pokemon for a variety of different uses, including raising their individual stats, changing their abilities, and swapping out their moves. VP can also be used to purchase Mega Stones and single-use battle items or to unlock more cosmetic options for trainer avatars.

Pokemon Champions will give players a new way to take their favorite Pokemon from several other games and gather them all in one place. The game will be compatible with the Pokemon Home app, allowing for easy transfer of Pokemon between Pokemon Champions and other Pokemon games. In addition to bringing over favorite monsters to the arena battler’s roster, players will also be able to perform a once-daily recruitment from a randomized selection of Pokemon in Pokemon Champions, although Pokemon acquired through this method can’t be sent to Pokemon Home and will only be part of players’ rosters for one week, unless that spend VP to make them permanent team members.

As was reported shortly after the game’s reveal, there will be limits and restrictions on which Pokemon players can use in Pokemon Champions at launch, as the full Pokedex of more than 1,000 different monsters will not be available on April 8. There is still no comprehensive list released by Nintendo or The Pokemon Company that details which Pokemon players will be able to take into battle on day one. However, the announcement does give away a few surprises, revealing that Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr have all made the cut, and they’ve all been given some special moves that have never been seen before. Additionally, the game’s newest trailer shows off dozens of different Pokemon, including Gallade, Milotic, Palafin, Whimsicott, Armorogue, Mega Charizard X, Tyranitar, Lucario, Mimikyu, and Garchomp.
