Pokemon Champions brings VGC to a much wider audience than mainline Pokemon games ever could, as it’s a free game available on Nintendo Switch and mobile. Not only that, but building teams is also much less of a hassle compared to mainline games, as players can use VPs to tweak any detail of their pocket monsters.

Yet, teambuilding is all but a simple matter in the game, as players need to account for the most powerful Pokemon in Pokemon Champions, their possible stats and moves, and how to counter them reliably. For newcomers, stat spreads of 32 points in two stats are good, but they can be much less effective in the long run as players encounter high-ranking opponents or partake in tournaments. A Pokemon player by the name of iWill shared a clip on Twitter showcasing their pairing of Mega Kangaskhan and Farigiraf against Archaludon and Mega Raichu Y. On the first turn of the game, Mega Kangaskhan uses Fake Out on Mega Raichu Y after being powered up by iWill’s Farigiraf with Helping Hand, KOing the Raichu in one hit. It’s worth noting that this was a critical hit, and Mega Raichu wouldn’t have been KOed by Fake Out, otherwise. However, the combination of Helping Hand and Mega Kangaskhan is particularly strong because the latter has a massive Attack stat and has the Parental Bond ability, which allows Kangaskhan’s cub to also perform a follow-up attack.

Both of these attacks are powered by an allied Helping Hand, which boosts the power of the ally’s attack for the turn by 50%. Normally, Fake Out is a low-power move with a base power of just 40, but Mega Kangaskhan is a Normal-type Pokemon, meaning it gains STAB for a 50% increase in damage. Combined with its high Attack stat, an Adamant nature to further boost the Attack stat, Helping Hand from an ally, and Parental Bond, Fake Out can hit like a truck. In this case, a great ally is Farigiraf in Pokemon Champions with Trick Room support against speedy teams. It uses Helping Hand, while also having the Armor Tail ability that prevents opponents from using priority moves like Fake Out itself.

Against a Mega Raichu Y in Pokemon Champions that has no bulk, i.e., up to 2 EVs in either HP or Defense, Mega Kangaskhan’s Fake Out with a partner’s Helping Hand deals between 79.5% and 94.8% of the opponent’s HP. This is a lot of damage, and it can be achieved by other means, too, even if the critical hit mattered for the OHKO in this specific case.

For example, Sneasler in Pokemon Champions learns Coaching, which raises the partner’s Attack and Defense by one stage each. The +1 boost to Attack achieves the exact same damage, as a one-stage Attack boost equals 50% more damage. It’s worth noting that Lucario learns both Coaching and Helping Hand, so it could be a good Pokemon to use for this strategy.
