Pokémon Fans Fight Over A Mew Card That Might Not Even Be Real

Pokémon Fans Fight Over A Mew Card That Might Not Even Be Real

The Pokémon card community doesn’t have enough nonsense to worry about already with scalpers and artificial scarcity, so let’s throw potentially fake cards into the mix. Both real collectors and human vultures have their eyes set on the upcoming 30th anniversary set launching in September, and as folks try to nail down the most desirable cards for collecting and reselling, they’re looking at leaks and details circulating from early packs. One card that is showing up online is a full-art Mew card that, at a glance, looks like any other Pokémon card, but to the trained eye, has telltale signs indicating it might be a fake.

The first images of the card (thanks, Dexerto) sport a “B/RGB” rarity mark, which has never been seen before, and fans are speculating that it could be a reference to the original Red, Blue, and Green games that launched 30 years ago. Creator and seller PokéAus opened a pack containing the card on a stream, and it does otherwise seem to contain cards that would be found in the 30th anniversary set, including one a group of guaranteed Pikachu cards that are supposed to be included in each. However, upon closer inspection, there are a few details that seem off about the Mew card that fans haven’t found any mention of in previous leaks. You can watch the video of the card being pulled below, but maybe turn your volume down before hitting play.

Hey Flat Mewthers, this is the full video with the Pikachu card be pulled after the Mew was pulled (last 5 seconds)

If you watch and still don’t believe it please just go ahead and take the rest of the year off. You’ve had too much internet for the year pic.twitter.com/y9CVD37asU

Some fans were skeptical about the card’s validity, even after watching the video, claiming that it could be an elaborate hoax pulled off by someone who’d made a fake card and a fake pack to create a viral moment, and there are a few inconsistencies in how the card is printed that lend some credence to that theory. As some have pointed out in places like Reddit, it seems to be missing the 30th anniversary stamp seen on other cards in the set. One person wrote:

Fake as hell.

  1. Doesn’t include the stamp.

  2. Doesn’t include copyright info.

  3. Has clear texture and print issues.

  4. Has border coloring not aligned with the set.

  5. The artist is clearly making fan art

However, not everyone is so sure, with some claiming that copyright info may be on the card despite being hard to see in the video, as well as pointing out that the 30th anniversary stamp may have been omitted for this card because it’s not a reprint of an older card like some cards in the anniversary sets are.

My take on this Mew: it’s real. Let’s address some concerns on why people think it’s fake.

No 30th stamp? Because it’s a new card within a new, secret subset with two other cards yet to be revealed (RGB).

Copyright information? It’s there. It’s super hard to see based on the… pic.twitter.com/X6nJWxELhA

The art on the card has is credited to artist YOSHIROTTEN, who has worked on Pokémon cards in the past that have a similar visual style to the Mew card shown in the video, though the artist has not publicly commented on the card yet. If it is a legitimate card, hopefully they haven’t seen all the mean comments saying how ugly the art is. Leave Green Mew alone. We’ve reached out to YOSHIROTTEN for comment and will update the story if we hear back.
