Pokemon GO Players Can Catch a Free Mewtwo in March Event

Pokemon GO players will have a chance to encounter and catch Mewtwo as part of an upcoming limited event for Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary. Pokemon GO is set to end its Precious Paths season on March 2, making way for its much-anticipated Memories in Motion era. An exciting month is coming for Pokemon GO players, with a fan-favorite Legendary monster making a comeback after four years.

2026 is a big year for Pokemon GO. Aside from the game’s 10th anniversary, the Pokemon franchise itself recently turned 30. To commemorate the milestone, Pokemon GO revealed its Anniversary All Out event for March 7 to 9. According to developer Scopely, “almost all” Pokemon that have been released in Pokemon GO will spawn in the wild. This will give fans a chance to complete their Pokedex by catching creatures that would otherwise be too hard to find. The event has exceptions, though, as Pokemon like Kecleon, Smeargle, or Scatterbug will remain locked behind special mechanics. Some Mythical and Legendary monsters, like Cosmog, Zygarde, and Mewtwo, are also part of this list. Fortunately for players, the latter is returning to Pokemon GO, and fans won’t have to participate in Raids to catch it.

Pokemon GO Confirms Free Mewtwo Encounter for Pokemon 30th Anniversary Event

From Tuesday, March 3, to Monday, March 9, Pokemon GO will hold its Pokemon 30th Anniversary event, which features a limited-time GO Pass that leads to an encounter with Mewtwo. If they’re lucky, fans might even encounter a shiny Mewtwo. Completing tasks and progressing through the GO Pass will also grant players encounters with Kanto Pokemon and Candy. Additionally, fans can purchase the GO Pass Deluxe starting at US$7.99 to get extra rewards like Mewtwo Candy XL, encounters with the Legendary Bird Trio, and Rare Candy. It was previously revealed that Mewtwo would return for Pokemon GO Fest 2026, which is expected for June. It seems players won’t have to wait too long anymore for the Legendary Psychic-type.

The event will also see any Pokemon originally from Kanto spawning in the wild, excluding Mewtwo, Mew, and regional Pokemon. It is worth noting that the Kanto forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will appear in the wild as well, despite normally being locked behind Raids. Reaching GO Pass Tiers 1 and 2 gives fans valuable bonuses like double Catch Candy and double XP, respectively. To help players complete the GO Pass faster, there won’t be a daily limit of GO Pass points from March 7 to 9. Moreover, fans should be on the lookout for Pokemon GO Raids, since 1-Star Raids will feature Pikachu wearing Red and Leaf’s hats, and 3-Star Raids will see Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. Finally, Ditto will be changing into many different wild Pokemon.

It is common for Legendary Pokemon to be event-exclusive, but many tend to return within months. However, while Shadow Mewtwo was featured in a 2024 limited event, its original form hasn’t returned to Pokemon GO since 2022. For players who have previously missed out on catching Mewtwo, the upcoming 30th Anniversary GO Pass can be their best chance at adding the Legendary.

On the other hand, some players believe that the game could finally release Mega Mewtwo X and Y later in the year. Pokemon GO recently introduced Super Mega Raids, tougher Raids that let fans catch stronger Mega Evolutions like Mega Victreebel and Mega Dragonite. Since Mewtwo will be part of GO Fest 2026, there’s a chance it could be added to Super Mega Raids. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Pokemon GO‘s Memories in Motion season, which will run from March 3 to June 2 and is set to debut several new Pokemon.
