To commemorate its 10th anniversary, Pokemon GO has launched a new event that grants players a free maxed-out Mewtwo for a limited time. The powerful Pokemon was already the center of Pokemon GO‘s ambitious GO Fest: Global event in July. Now, fans have yet another chance to catch the Legendary creature with no Mega Raids required.
In mid-July, the GO Fest: Global 2026 weekend introduced the long-requested Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, along with an exclusive Special Research featuring Zeraora. Some players experienced issues when joining Mega Raids during the event, so Pokemon GO offered all players a GO Fest do-over with a second shot at obtaining Mega Mewtwo Y. The Pokemon was expected to return during GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale in early September. However, the game has confirmed that fans won’t have to wait that long for Mewtwo’s return, thanks to a new event available now.

- Catch 10 Pokemon: x1 Master Ball

Starting from August 12 to September 6, fans can simply log into Pokemon GO to obtain a Timed Research that rewards an encounter with Mewtwo with a CP of 2387, equivalent to perfect IVs. The maxed-out Mewtwo will have the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y, one of the most powerful Psychic-type monsters in Pokemon GO. The limited research is already available for all players, and it is incredibly easy to complete. Fans only need to catch ten Pokemon and power up Pokemon ten times. The missions also grant a Master Ball and 500 Mega Mewtwo Energy. Additionally, the 100% Mewtwo will have a special background featuring the Earth.
This perfect Mewtwo is a surprise gift as part of Pokemon GO‘s extensive 10th Anniversary celebration. The exclusive Timed Research will expire on September 6, meaning players will need to complete the challenges before then to claim the Legendary. It is worth noting that this new event is a nod to the July 9 in-person event in Times Square, which gifted attendees a free hundo Mewtwo as well. Pokemon GO has stated that players who participated in the New York event can still complete the new Timed Research, but will receive a Mewtwo with random stats and different rewards instead. Moreover, the game has confirmed that Mewtwo with a Times Square background will eventually return in the future.

Pokemon GO still has big plans for the remainder of its Forever Forward season. Aside from the hundo Mega Mewtwo Y Timed Research, more Mega Evolutions are set to make their debut in the coming months. The fan-favorite Mega Starmie is coming to Pokemon GO on August 22, while the Kalos starters have already been confirmed to debut during GO Fest: Mega Finale on September 5 and 6.
The end of Forever Forward is still weeks away, but developer Scopely has already teased content for the next season. Pokemon GO unveiled dates for its next three Community Days, starting with a September 12 Community Day Classic event. It remains to be seen which Pokemon will star in the monthly events.
