Pokopia dominated sales and reviews when it released earlier this year, establishing it as the highest reviewed game in the Pokemon franchise and of 2026, but it has lost the title of “highest reviewed game of the year” to a new May 2026 release. To be clear, Pokopia is fantastic and will no doubt go down in history as one of the best games of 2026, but it no longer holds the #1 spot.
That’s according to the review aggregation site OpenCritic, which tracks the “Top Critic Average” of a game across all platforms. Pokopia now sits at #2 on the website with a Top Critic Average of 90, which is impressive given that it is one of three games to hit 90+. Even the highly reviewed and well-loved Resident Evil Requiem sits at an 89, while PC game Lost and Found Co. ties with Pokopia at 90. Topping both Pokopia and Lost and Found Co. is Mixtape.

Mixtape is the Highest Rated Game of 2026
Mixtape was recently released on May 7, and its reviews make it the highest-rated game of the year so far. Its Top Critic Average is 93, with 100% of critics recommending it. Of its 33 reviews, 15 are 10/10s. Of the remaining 18, 12 are rated 9/10 or above, meaning only 6 reviews so far are below 9/10. This may change over the next few days as more reviews come in, and it will likely change by the end of the year as well. Games like Grand Theft Auto 6 are still slated for release, after all, but topping Pokopia and taking the top spot of the year is still mighty impressive, no matter how short-lived it could be.

More impressive yet is how often runtimes are held against a game. It only takes about 3 hours to beat Mixtape, with only a couple more needed for those who want to 100% the game. Obviously, that may mean fans get more for their mileage out of Pokopia, but a short, sweet, beautiful, and top-notch game is not defined by its runtime. It’s good to see that not excessively held against the game, especially by its own nature.
For the uninitiated, Mixtape is a narrative adventure game developed by Beethoven and Dinosaur, published by Annapurna Interactive. In it, three friends have one last night together as they move through a “mixtape” of memories, looking at key moments of their lives, with an overall emphasis on Mixtape‘s songs and soundtrack, too. Beethoven and Dinosaur describe Mixtape as a game where players “immerse themselves in the teenage wasteland,” which covers everything from “skateboarding and flying to taking photos at an abandoned theme park, hitting baseballs, and putting on a fireworks show from the backseat of a car….from the first kiss to the last dance.”

That nostalgia and narrative, no doubt, played a role in Mixtape‘s stellar reviews, and it’ll be interesting to see what else comes out of Beethoven and Dinosaur in the future. For now, the studio can be proud that it stood ten toes down against the beloved Pokemon franchise, at least in critics’ reviews.
