Do you know why I respect Post Malone over any other “famous” card collector? Because mans actually plays with his cards. During an episode of Game Knights, a Magic: The Gathering Actual Play YouTube series, Postie whipped out his The One Ring card—the only card of its kind printed by MTG developer Wizards of the Coast which he paid over $2 million for, took it partially out of its protective slab on a game table that had earlier been subjected to drink spillage—and played it.

Post Malone is a well-documented MTG fan with his own Secret Lair collaboration and charity tournaments. But actually playing the literal holy grail of Magic cards is another thing entirely, speaking to a deep and true love of the game that goes beyond having an expensive thing just to have it. Something I don’t think fake Pokémon fan Logan Paul can lay claim to.
Despite Posty letting the One Ring see actual play time (you can check out his deck here), the true hero at the table was Rachel Weeks and her Notary Hobbits deck. Her deck makes use of Notary Hobbits’ ability to copy itself and turn other hobbit cards into mana. With it and help from a card that essentially exponentially increased her mana pool, she was able to play a card that let her indiscriminately kill her opponents’ creatures and snatch creature cards out of their graveyards for the low price of free. When your opponents’ graveyard becomes your deck, and you have the ability to generate massive amounts of mana to pay for big-ass, powerful-ass creatures, all kinds of shenanigans became possible. These synergies made her the biggest threat at the table for a good portion of the game, which absolutely delighted my green-mana-big-creatures-loving-ass.
Oh shit. I know what’s happening here. I’m being influenced. I’m not a Commander player; I think the games go on for too long (I’m old), the format is too big and intimidating for me, and I tend to enjoy the snappier play and forced creativity that comes from the stricter boundaries of limited formats like draft and sealed. But watching this show and seeing the crazy shit you can get up to when you build a deck out of the nigh-unlimited card pool that Commander permits is powerfully seductive. Kinda like the One Ring itself.
It was a delight watching Post Malone play this game of Commander, flailing about in the earliest turns while his opponents teased him for his single creature that he wasn’t able to use effectively. But once he pulled out the One Ring, which grants him protection from all damage, things changed. Drastically. All that earlier flailing melted away to reveal a cogent strategy with a couple of lucky topdecks for added drama. (Always pay the mana tax for Rhystic Study!) Post Malone wound up winning the game, but I do have to rescind my respect for him because I categorically do not respect mono blue players. Sorry.
