However, just a month before its March release, Ubisoft decided to postpone the game indefinitely, and it would ultimately switch development studios, with Ubisoft Montreal taking over development from Ubisoft Mumbai. Despite numerous assurances that the game was progressing, including the publisher’s announcement of a planned 2026 release at its Ubisoft Forward event, Ubisoft announced the Prince of Persia remake’s cancellation this month. The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is just one of six titles Ubisoft has canceled this year, and is part of a rapidly growing list of games the publisher has canceled in the last several years.

On the official Prince of Persia Twitter page, Ubisoft has offered a statement on the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake’s cancellation. Acknowledging the disappointment that longtime fans will feel by the news, the publisher notes that the game had “real potential,” but the studio wasn’t “able to reach the level of quality [players] deserve.” Ubisoft claims that continuing development on the project “would have required more time and investment than [it] could reasonably commit.”
No further details were given on what caused the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake’s rocky development, with the publisher merely stating that it “didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.” Ubisoft also stated that the Prince of Persia brand remains important to it and that it will not abandon the franchise entirely. The studio will instead make a wide reset to its plans, establishing a greater focus on excelling with its open-world and live-service titles.
