PSA: Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Players Can Easily Fail a Legendary Encounter Due to an Annoying Glitch

With Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen coming to Nintendo Switch, a whole new generation of players will be able to access these classic GBA games over 20 years after their original release. For new Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players checking out the games for the first time, or veterans for whom it’s been a while since their last playthrough, it’s important to know that these Gen 1 remakes have some quirks that can affect gameplay and completion. In particular, there is one Legendary encounter players will face in the post-game that can end in disaster due to a glitch if players aren’t prepared.

Although Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are remakes of the original Gen 1 Kanto games, their status as Gen 3 releases means they have the luxury of including more than just the original 151 in their Pokedex. In particular, several Gen 2 critters can be found in the post-game of FireRed and LeafGreen, within the Sevii Islands that are exclusive to these remakes. These Gen 2 mons include the Legendary Beast trio of Suicune, Raikou, and Entei, but two of these three can easily be failed.

Nintendo Switch Fans, Say Hello to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen’s Hardest Gym Leader

With the release of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Nintendo Switch players can experience one of the hardest Gym Leader battles in the series.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Have a Post-Game Legendary Encounter That’s Easy to Fail

While the first three of the Sevii Islands can be accessed prior to defeating the Elite Four, the remaining four are only unlocked after defeating the Champion and catching at least 60 Pokemon. With these conditions met, Professor Oak will give players the National Dex, and the other four Sevii Islands will be unlocked for players to progress through in their post-game quest to help Celio obtain the Ruby and the Sapphire to upgrade his Network Machine. Once players complete this post-game storyline and rid the Sevii Islands of Team Rocket, they will gain access to the final Legendary encounters of the game, including Mewtwo and the Legendary Beasts.

How to Get the Legendary Suicune, Raikou, and Entei in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

After Celio’s Network Machine is fully upgraded and Team Rocket is no longer a concern, Suicune, Raikou, and Entei become available for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players to try and catch. However, only one of these Legendary Beasts will appear per save game, and the one players will encounter is dependent on their choice of starter:

  • Bulbasaur โ€” Entei
  • Charmander โ€” Suicune
  • Squirtle โ€” Raikou

These Legendary Pokemon will be roaming encounters, meaning players will have to randomly find them on a route somewhere in the Kanto Region, but the route they can be found on changes. To complicate things further, these Legendary Beasts will attempt to flee on their first turn, forcing players to start the hunt all over again, unless they have a lead Pokemon with the Arena Trap ability or can use the move Mean Look to prevent the Legendary from fleeing.

Using repels while hunting for these roaming Legendaries while having a critter below level 50 at the front of the party will help filter out some of the unwanted wild spawns without preventing the desired Legendary from appearing.

What Makes these Roaming Legendaries So Easy to Fail

Unfortunately, players who chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle as their starter and are chasing either Entei or Raikou have a high chance of failing this encounter and locking themselves out from ever obtaining this Legendary in FireRed and LeafGreen. This is due to a glitch that causes the critter to permanently disappear if it uses Roar during battle. Since only Entei and Raikou know Roar, players who chose Charmander and are searching for Suicune are unaffected. However, this also means that players should save their Master Ball for this encounter to guarantee success without having to worry about the Roar glitch ruining their chance of securing the mon.
