A Red Dead Redemption 2 player has discovered a hidden tombstone tucked away in the abandoned town of Pleasance, located under the surface of the map. The massively popular open-world game from Rockstar Games is filled with plenty of mysteries scattered throughout its re-imagining of the American Wild West, waiting for players to uncover. Red Dead Redemption 2 gives players the opportunity to engage in a variety of unique side missions, featuring robberies, mini-games, and even paranormal quests.
Red Dead Redemption 2‘s array of side content spans a multitude of storylines separate from the game’s central campaign. The game’s Stranger Missions tasks Arthur with everything from hunting down a serial killer running rampant in Valentine to dealing with an in-game cult. Reddit user PriorCard7999 shared Red Dead Redemption 2‘s newest mystery to the RDR2mysteries subreddit. The post includes an image of the small cemetery in the abandoned Red Dead Redemption 2 community of Pleasance, showing the 10 tombstones found there. A second image reveals a strange 11th tombstone hidden under the map, dedicated to an Edmund Tobin said to have been killed by gunshot. The mysterious tombstone matches up with one of the victims of the in-game Pleasance Massacre, whose tombstone is already included in the above-ground cemetery.

While the tombstone clearly was not meant to be found by players, fans shared a variety of theories about the unusual grave. Some fans suggested that the Red Dead Redemption 2 tombstone is not the first of its kind, with Rockstar Games often hiding unused content underneath the map, where fans cannot normally find it. Another fan cited a similar instance of hidden scrapped content beneath the Van Horn Trading Post, said to include Civil War-era equipment and weaponry hidden away from normal players. One fan suggested that the gravestone was likely used in testing for Red Dead Redemption 2, with simply deleting the gravestone from the game potentially causing functionality issues.
While the Red Dead Redemption 2 gravestone may not feature a grand mystery, the community of Pleasance has long been a source of fan theories. Pleasance’s status as an abandoned community comes with a plethora of in-game lore surrounding the settlement, including the Pleasance Massacre in 1883 that claimed the lives of 10 people. Red Dead Redemption 2 has hinted at further tragedies to befall Pleasance, including references to a plague that hit the community and a fire that struck the community’s schoolhouse. Fan theories have also suggested that the town may have been home to Satanic worship, citing the lack of a cross at the town’s church.
Red Dead Redemption 2‘s many hidden storylines continue to mystify fans, even nearly a decade after the game’s launch. One of the game’s most popular missions hints at the existence of time travel in the Red Dead universe, with the Geology for Beginners mission seeing Arthur help a man who claims to be a time traveler. Players can even find an actual ghost haunting Bluewater Marsh in the game’s LeMoyne region, learning more about the tragic story of Agnes Dowd.
