Resident Evil Movie Director Reveals The Scariest Scene In The Series That Made Him "Nope Out"

Zach Cregger, the director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, has revealed which scene scared him the most in the game series, and it was a spooky scene from 2021’s Resident Evil Village involving a baby that hunts you down.

Prefacing his comments with the disclaimer that he was playing Village in virtual reality, Cregger told the PlayStation Blog he was disturbed at the scene where players enter the dollhouse, go down into the basement, and assemble the big doll on the table. As part of this scene, a giant baby emerges that comes after the player.

“There was something about the sounds that baby made, and the lights cut out, and you’re running through these halls, and you have to hide under a bed,” he said.

“It was the only time playing a video game I’ve ever actually just noped out and taken a break. I was like, ‘This is too intense. I took the headset off, had a cup of coffee, then went back in and finished it later. But I mean, that really got me. It’s so scary. It’s honestly f**king terrifying,” Cregger added.

VR can be heighten the feelings of tension and dread, but that scene was also very scary in non-VR, as are numerous other sequences in the long-running series. Now we’ll just have to wait for Cregger to tell us what he thinks is the scariest non-VR scene in the Resident Evil series.

Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie does not feature any Resident Evil characters or adapt any of the stories from past games. He said he feels “so sensitive” about talking about the movie on behalf of the game fans, because he believes fans of the games are “only going to be happy if I tell the story of the games.” He didn’t want to do that, however, because “I feel like I wouldn’t do it justice.”

The Resident Evil movie is inspired by the games, however, in that it will follow a character–a courier played by Weapons actor Austin Butler–from point A to point B in a setup that may feel familiar to fans of the game series.

“You go on this crazy journey, and you go through all these different environments, and things just seem to be escalating and escalating. That feels so cinematic to me. So I wanted to tell a story that could take place in the Resident Evil world, but wasn’t telling a story that the games had already told,” he said.

The Resident Evil movie releases in theaters on September 18. For more, be sure to check out our thoughts on why it may not be such a big deal that the Resident Evil movie doesn’t look like the games.
