Resident Evil Requiem Leak Hints at Mercenaries Mode

Resident Evil Requiem Leak Hints at Mercenaries Mode

Players have already been enjoying multiple playthroughs of Resident Evil Requiem, with many making fun new Easter egg discoveries and others finding optimized routes and strategies, but a number of fans are eagerly awaiting more gameplay updates to the survival horror title. Capcom has already confirmed that a story DLC and mini-game are on the way, and one player may have found evidence of the popular Mercenaries Mode as the next big addition coming up to Resident Evil Requiem.

Mercenaries Mode first debuted in the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in 1999 and saw players facing hoards of zombies and other bioweapons in timed challenges. While each iteration of Mercenaries Mode in Resident Evil history has varied slightly, and often differing based on which playable character is chosen, it has been widely considered to be one of the best mini-games in the series. As such, it would come as no surprise to see the iconic mode making a triumphant return in Resident Evil Requiem, and there may already be early clues of Capcom’s desire to bring Mercenaries Mode back.

Resident Evil Requiem Leak Teases DLC Starring Character from the Outbreak Games

A potential new Resident Evil Requiem leak teases possible DLC that could star one of the lead characters from the Outbreak games.

Data mining by SYRKOV has revealed several unused audio tracks hidden within the Resident Evil Requiem game files, including one track that contains clock ticking sounds reminiscent of the countdown indicator in Mercenaries Mode. Audiences have already marked their calendars for a Resident Evil Requiem update coming in May, which game director Koshi Nakanishi teased as a “surprise” mini-game. At the time of that initial announcement, players already assumed that Nakanishi was perhaps referring to Mercenaries Mode, and now the audio track discovered by SYRKOV has further bolstered the belief that Mercenaries Mode may be on the way to Resident Evil Requiem sooner than expected.

If it does prove true that Mercenaries Mode will be added to Requiem in May, then it could be worth looking at the various characters who may be playable in the upcoming mini-game. Lead Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy would no doubt be utilized in Mercenaries Mode, but some of the antagonists could also make an appearance. The Mercenaries Mode in Resident Evil Village lets fans tear apart monsters as villains Lady Dimitrescu and Heisenberg, so it would not be unexpected to see Zeno, Victor Gideon, or even The Girl from Requiem joining the fray and cutting down swarms of enemies in a Mercenaries Mode.

Another fun Mercenaries addition for Resident Evil Requiem could be Tofu. The beloved bean curd block began as a hit-box test model before earning a mini-game in the 1998 release of Resident Evil 2. Leon can spot Tofu in Resident Evil Requiem while exploring the destroyed Raccoon City Police Department, and the legendary edible character’s history as a survivor would make Tofu a perfect choice for Mercenaries Mode in Requiem.

Of course, there is always the possibility that the unused audio tracks found by SYRKOV were simply never utilized, or they may be for the story DLC or another unannounced mini-game. Considering the popularity and continued presence of Mercenaries Mode throughout the RE franchise, though, it could be argued that there is a solid chance that the “surprise” mini-game coming to Resident Evil Requiem in May will be one fans have long enjoyed. Interested players can follow along for any official confirmation on the planned updates coming to Resident Evil Requiem, along with other survival horror gaming news.
