Retro Final Fantasy-Inspired Game One Fenix Down Officially Confirmed for September 28

The golden age of 90s Japanese RPGs still resonates with players decades later, and while a lot of modern JRPGs have moved away from that period, an upcoming game is bringing it back. Classic games like Final Fantasy helped define an era of colorful casts, turn-based battles, sprawling worlds, memorable soundtracks, and stories that could start with a small personal conflict before eventually becoming a fight for the fate of an entire world. That particular style of JRPG has never really disappeared, but the charm of the 90s did.

Still, that nostalgia has factored into a lot of games—not just this new one. Square Enix itself is taking a few steps back from games like Final Fantasy 16 and is releasing Final Fantasy Resonance this October. It is an HD-2D pixel art game that shares more in common with the older games than anything “modern,” and the same can be said of One Fenix Down—a game whose name honors the franchise’s “Phoenix Down.”

Final Fantasy Resonance Officially Gives the Franchise Two Futures

The series has taken an action RPG direction lately, but Final Fantasy Resonance offers something very different that could shape Square Enix’s plans.

One Fenix Down Finally Has a Release Date

One Fenix Down launches on Steam on September 28, 2026, bringing its retro-inspired JRPG adventure game to PC. The story follows a young idealist named Fenix Strauss, dismissed by his militant family as a war-dodger until an ancient spirit gives him mysterious powers and delivers a cryptic message about “Fate.” In typical Final Fantasy game fashion, he is joined by an ever-growing party of companions, as his search for answers quickly pulls him into political tensions and conspiracies.

Combat is built around the traditional turn-based systems that helped define the golden era 90s JRPGs, but One Fenix Down adds modern mechanics focused on elemental interactions, party synergy, and tactical decision-making. More than 14 playable party members can join the adventure, so it only makes sense for that team comp to weigh in heavily. Characters also have unique abilities and Excedo Skills, while elemental magic, martial arts, traps, and monster abilities add more variety to the combat system. Also among said characters, players will find themselves enjoying a world-sprawling RPG narrative structure.

One Fenix Down already has some momentum behind it, with Regalcraft Games’ 2024 Kickstarter reaching its funding goal in just three days. The RPG will also appear during Steam’s Party-Based RPG Fest 2026 from September 14 to 21, where players can check out its demo ahead of launch. For anyone who misses the era when a Final Fantasy-style adventure meant assembling a party, exploring an enormous world, collecting increasingly ridiculous equipment, and watching a personal story become a battle for the fate of everything, One Fenix Down is making a very deliberate return to that formula this September.
