Rockstar Games Just Keeps Getting Away With It

Rockstar Games Just Keeps Getting Away With It

Gamers and industry insiders are all anticipating Grand Theft Auto 6 to be one of the biggest game launches of all time, but Rockstar’s approach to marketing has occasionally been more controversial than hype-inducing. The excitement for Grand Theft Auto 6 is still very much present, and I’m still crossing my fingers that it’s one of the best games of the decade. However, some of the choices that Rockstar is making leading up to the launch have left a lot of people frustrated about the state of the industry.

Rockstar has already angered fans by confirming that GTA 6‘s physical version won’t include an actual disc, and certain side content being locked behind the game’s pricier Ultimate Edition has been just as controversial. Rockstar seems to be getting away with a lot of questionable marketing decisions, and its latest move with the recently announced Netflix extended look is one of the company’s wildest moves yet.

If GTA 6 Is Delayed Again, 2026 Needs Its Games Back

There are fears of GTA 6 getting pushed back again, and if that’s the case, there are some delayed games that deserve to take its spot.

Rockstar Has Found a Way to Hide GTA 6’s Exclusive Look Behind a Paywall

The wait for a new look into GTA 6 that isn’t just a collection of images has been anticipated for well over a year now, and that day is finally on the horizon. Rockstar is hosting an exclusive GTA 6 preview on Netflix later this month, meaning that anyone who doesn’t have a subscription to the service might feel pressured to sign up and subscribe. Depending on which tier someone chooses, the cost of Netflix can range between $9 to $27 a month.

It’s important to note that the GTA 6 preview won’t be on Netflix forever, though. The Netflix event premieres on August 27 at 3PM ET, and it will be uploaded to the Rockstar YouTube channel later that day at 9PM. So, no one is being forced to subscribe to Netflix in order to watch the extended look, but when it’s a game as big as GTA 6, the FOMO is serious. There have already been reports that the GTA 6 release date has inspired people to take off work ahead of time in order to jump into the game as soon as possible on launch day. That level of excitement means that there are probably at least a few people out there who would be willing to subscribe to Netflix just to be able to be among the first to see Rockstar’s deep dive.

Even though everyone will be able to watch the extended GTA 6 preview eventually, this kind of marketing is bound to be replicated by other studios and publishers. Rockstar is one of the most influential developers in the industry, and putting trailers and sneak peeks behind paywalls sets a worrying precedent. There is already a growing fear that GTA 6‘s price is going to inspire others to follow suit, and it wouldn’t be surprising if other highly anticipated AAA games got a similar Netflix exclusive showcase in the future.

GTA 6’s Ultimate Edition Was the First Sign That Rockstar Isn’t Afraid of Paywalls

  • The Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 costs $100.
  • Exclusive vehicles and garages are included in this version.
  • The Ultimate Edition features more cosmetic options for Jason and Lucia.
  • Exclusive weapons are included.
  • The Ultimate Edition even has exclusive locations and activities.

If the Ultimate Edition was simply focused on cosmetics, that wouldn’t be too big of an issue. Cosmetics don’t affect gameplay in any meaningful way, but locking specific locations and side activities behind the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition has left a lot of fans frustrated. Honestly, GTA 6‘s Ultimate Edition is cheaper than I expected it to be, but it’s the principle.

Rockstar’s Marketing Push Is a Clear Reminder That GTA 6 Is More Than a Game at This Point

Even if there’s a huge surprise and GTA 6 isn’t well-received, its launch is going to be one of the most important moments in the industry. GTA 6 is more than a game. It’s a blockbuster-sized chapter in the pop culture history book that feels like a massive turning point for gaming in general. Games by Rockstar have built a reputation for being some of the best in the business, but there is something different about GTA 6 that has the potential to kickstart a new era of gaming.

It’s impossible to predict what GTA 6‘s first week of sales will be, but financial analysts have made some bold estimates. GTA 6 has been projected to bring in around $3 billion to $5 billion in its first week alone. Rockstar hasn’t announced GTA 6‘s online version yet, but once that arrives, that’s going to make even more money for the company. To this day, GTA Online still brings in wild numbers, which is incredibly impressive for a 13-year-old game.

GTA 5 was very influential, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is still used as the main example to compare how good a new game’s graphics are even though the game is eight years old. Between GTA 5‘s wild longevity and continuous success and Red Dead Redemption 2‘s rich, lifelike world that contains a story that’s just as well-crafted, people are expecting GTA 6‘s gameplay and story to bring the best of both games together into one experience that also improves upon everything that made its predecessors so good.

Only time will tell if GTA 6 can live up to the constantly increasing expectations. I’m optimistic, because Rockstar has its reputation for a reason. The developer has proved time and time again that it’s one of the strongest studios in gaming, but certain marketing decisions have me worried about the future of gaming marketing in general. Gamers are having to prepare for a future where Sony stops making physical games, the next generation of consoles might cost over $1,000, and AAA publishers potentially follow GTA 6‘s lead and bump the standard price up to $80 per game.

Gaming’s future is already looking expensive, and that shouldn’t be extended to trailers and gameplay deep dives. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Netflix GTA 6 preview fares. Momentarily keeping a sneak peek that gamers have been waiting so long for behind a Netflix premiere is aggravating, but there is always the option to wait it out and check out the extended preview on YouTube.
