Roguelike Strategy Game with ‘Very Positive’ Reviews Officially Coming to PS5 on July 29

PlayStation 5 players are getting access to a highly rated 2025 roguelike strategy game on July 29. Developer Hypnohead and publisher tinyBuild have confirmed that The King is Watching is coming to the PlayStation 5 later this month after being a PC-exclusive game since it launched on Steam in July of last year. During this time, The King is Watching has earned a “Very Positive” user review score on the platform.

The King is Watching is also releasing on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on July 29.

Despite PlayStation getting in hot water with fans over Sony’s plans to end physical disc production for its games in 2028, the library of digital-only indie titles on the platform continues to grow in 2026. Palworld recently launched into 1.0 and is only available digitally on PS5, while other indie games like Mina the Hollower are currently available digitally, with physical copies planned to release in the future. The King is Watching is only launching digitally on consoles this month, and hasn’t been confirmed for a future physical release yet.

7 Beginner Tips For The King Is Watching

The new tower defense roguelite The King Is Watching has some unusual mechanics, and these beginner tips will help players come to grips with them.

Roguelike Strategy Game The King is Watching Hits PS5 on July 29

Hypnohead and tinyBuild released a new trailer for The King is Watching, showcasing the game running on consoles and confirming its July 29 release date. At its core, The King is Watching is a strategy game that uses roguelike mechanics for progression. Players take on the role of a king and are charged with managing their kingdom’s production and defense against incoming waves of enemies, similar to a tower defense game’s mechanics.

The King is Watching is a roguelite kingdom builder. Rule by the power of your royal gaze! Decide between producing resources, training armies, or balancing both, while adapting to unique events every run.

However, the unique gameplay hook of The King is Watching is in the name; subjects only work while the king is watching. This means players will have to manage tasks carefully since they can’t watch everyone all the time, and choosing between watching the miners, farmers, barracks, or other industries to oversee can have consequences if others are allowed to slack off. RTS-style combat is also part of this gameplay loop, and players will have to adapt on the fly to switch which workers they are overseeing to best prepare for incoming bosses.

As with other roguelike games like Hades and Slay the Spire 2, players can choose permanent upgrades to keep between each run, unlocking useful abilities and new strategies to use in future runs. When one kingdom falls, another comes back stronger, and the more players invest in The King is Watching‘s permanent upgrades, the greater the chance they will have at success with their next kingdom.

The King is Watching also just released its Shifting Sands free update last month, which added a brand-new map, new units and weapons, an endless mode, and customization options to make runs more challenging. All of these features will be included with the console release of the game at launch. PlayStation already has a packed July 2026 release schedule, but roguelike fans itching for a new challenge should add The King is Watching‘s July 29 release to their calendar.
