Rumor: New PlayStation Handheld Coming This Year, But Not the One You Expect

Rumor: New PlayStation Handheld Coming This Year, But Not the One You Expect

Recent rumors are suggesting that PlayStation could be planning to launch a brand-new revision of the PS Portal later this year. While not as cemented in the handheld gaming market as one of its biggest competitors in Nintendo, Sony has a long history of handheld platforms in the PlayStation line, dating back to the mid-2000s. PlayStation launched two major handheld gaming consoles throughout the 2000s and 2010s, though the commercial failure of the PS Vita would see Sony largely step away from the handheld market in 2019. However, 2023 saw the PlayStation brand make its big handheld return with the PS Portal.

The PlayStation Portal serves as Sony’s newest attempt at giving fans a way to play their PlayStation games on the go. While not a fully standalone handheld console like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, the PS Portal allows players to sync with their consoles when away from home, using PlayStation’s pre-existing Remote Play architecture. The Portal has reportedly been a significant success for Sony since its debut in November 2023, emerging as the PlayStation’s best-selling console accessory of 2024 and slowly seeing its ownership numbers rise throughout the years. Now, PlayStation may be planning a major revision to the PS Portal.

Rumor: PlayStation State of Play Coming in February

A new rumor points to Sony hosting a new State of Play livestream event for PlayStation in February, likely revealing new details about 2026 titles.

Sony May Launch A New PS Portal Revision This Year

Recent information shared by prominent Sony insider KeplerL2 suggests that Sony is preparing a new version of the PlayStation Portal. According to the report, Sony is currently working on a new revision of the PlayStation Portal with an OLED screen, expected to be a big visual boost from the LCD screen used by the original model. The report did not confirm any other features that could arrive with the new PS Portal upgrade, only confirming the different screen on the new model. Kepler also did not share a hard release date for the OLED PlayStation Portal, simply stating that it would release sometime in 2026.

A brand-new entry in the PlayStation Portal line would follow some big upgrades hitting the platform in late 2025. Sony officially added cloud streaming on the PlayStation Portal for PS Plus Premium members in November, allowing fans to remotely stream select games with the device. The update also brought with it some big upgrades to the PlayStation Portal’s UI, including a fully redesigned home screen alongside support for 3D audio and new accessibility options. The PlayStation Portal has continued to see steady adoption by fans as well, with 7% of PS5 owners owning a PS Portal, as of January 2026.

The OLED PS Portal Joins Another Rumored Sony Handheld

A new version of the PlayStation Portal is not the only rumor regarding a new handheld platform from the gaming juggernaut. Leaks have surfaced about a new handheld device connected to the in-development PlayStation 6, reportedly set to be more powerful than the recently-released ROG Xbox Ally X. Early information has suggested that the handheld console may be dockable, similar to Nintendo’s Switch consoles, allowing players to improve the device’s performance for playing on a TV. Sony has not officially confirmed any details about a potential handheld platform for the PS6, though it isn’t expected to launch until 2027 at the earliest.

PlayStation’s new revision of the PS Portal could be the perfect way to tide fans over during the wait for the PS6. Recent reports have suggested that the tentative release date of the PlayStation 6 may have been pushed back even further, beyond its previously rumored 2027 launch window. The ongoing RAM shortage is also believed to have taken a toll on the console’s development, with prices of RAM chips spiking throughout the past few months. The PS6’s newest delays may make the rumored OLED PS Portal an enticing option for fans waiting for Sony’s next big console release.
