Santa Monica Studio’s Next Game Release Window Narrowed Down

Santa Monica Studio’s Next Game Release Window Narrowed Down

The PlayStation 5 could be getting a new game from Santa Monica Studio next year, if new rumors turn out to be true. Creative Director Cory Barlog has kept tight-lipped about what Santa Monica Studio has in store next, but the mysterious project could be coming to the PS5 as soon as next year.

Santa Monica Studio taking Kratos into the Norse realm was a major shift for the franchise, but it has proven to be a risk well worth taking that has left many wondering how the developer will surprise players next. This year has already been an unexpected one for the God of War series with the shadow drop of God of War: Sons of Sparta and confirmation that the God of War trilogy remake is happening. However, the former was mostly developed by Mega Cat Studios, so Santa Monica Studio’s plans are still quite secretive. According to a new rumor, though, the developer may have something to show gamers in 2027.

God of War Sons of Sparta’s Deimos is the Exact Opposite of GOW Ragnarok’s Atreus, But That’s Not a Good Thing

God of War Sons of Sparta is a fun new take on the franchise, but Deimos may have players actually wishing for Atreus’ yapping.

New Rumors Suggest That Santa Monica Studio’s Next Project Will Launch For the PS5 in 2027

These rumors come from longtime leakers Shinobi602 on ResetEra and NateTheHate on Twitter. Both leakers have a solid track record of revealing information before it’s officially confirmed, but their words should still be taken with a grain of salt. In a reply to a ResetEra post that claims Cory Barlog’s next game would come out around 2028, Shinobi602 replied, “Not that far (barring any delays, of course).” These comments may not outright say 2027 is the release date of the mysterious project, but it definitely implies that could be the case, as long as production goes according to plan. NateTheHate is less ambiguous, stating, “The game will be out in 2027.” It’s unclear if the potential 2027 project is a new God of War game or not.

Back in the summer of 2025, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier also shared some interesting teases about Santa Monica Studio’s next game. Once again in a ResetEra forum, he said, “It’s not a new IP, but it might feel like one.” It’s hard to say for sure, but this could imply that the next project from the developer is still God of War, just in a different setting. After the events of Ragnarok, it feels like Kratos and Atreus’ time in the Norse realm has run its course. There have been plenty of theories that the next God of War could go to different realms, with Egypt being one of the most popular ones suggested.

Santa Monica Studio Isn’t the Only Major Sony-Owned Developer That Could Shake Up 2027

A brand-new game from Santa Monica Studio would be exciting enough, but Naughty Dog also has Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet in the pipeline. This is the Uncharted and The Last of Us developer’s first original IP in over a decade, so there are a lot of people eager to see what this new series is all about. So far, Naughty Dog hasn’t revealed a timeframe for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet‘s release date. However, speculation from industry insiders, specifically Jason Schreier, think a 2027 launch is likely.

If both Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog finish production in time to release their games in 2027, it would be a huge year for the PS5. The Sony console feels like it’s finally hit its stride, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and the unnamed Santa Monica Studio game would be two of the biggest releases it has seen yet. Upcoming games like Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine are continuing a strong trend for PS5 exclusives in 2026, but a potential one-two punch of Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog in 2027 would be huge.
