Another CinemaCon is here and that means Paramount is once again showing the first glimpse of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie to event attendees and not to the rest of us. Just as it did with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2024, Paramount presented an early look at Sonic the Hedgehog 4 at the industry trade show held in Las Vegas, and if you weren’t in the room, tough luck. However, we have the next best thing: descriptions of what the trailer shows from people who were there.
Reporter Jeffrey Harris posted on X that the teaser was mostly made up of footage from the first three movies; however, CinemaCon attendees also saw footage of Jim Carrey’s Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik “staggering out of a spaceship” and shouting “Robotnik…saves…world!” So it sounds like despite his heroic sacrifice at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Robotnik is very much alive and maybe maintaining that change of heart. Eggman has joined forces with Sonic and friends multiple times over the course of the series, though it’s usually a temporary alliance as they fight a greater threat. I would be pretty bummed if he somehow gets turned into a villain again by Metal Sonic’s influence or something. Reminds me of an inferior video game adaptation, maybe?
Concept art from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 seemed to imply that Metal Sonic could have been created by an alternate-universe version of Robotnik, which would allow Carrey to return to the role without undermining the original character’s sacrifice. But now it seems like the mad scientist is still very much alive, so we’ll see how the movie handles that down the line. According to Jonathan Sim, Amy Rose was also present in the trailer, but she didn’t speak, so no one’s heard Kristen Bell’s performance as the pink hedgehog just yet.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is still almost a full year away, as the movie is coming to theaters on March 19, 2027.
