Sony Could Be Pulling the Plug on PlayStation VR2

Sony Could Be Pulling the Plug on PlayStation VR2

Recent signs indicate that Sony may be phasing out the PlayStation VR2 headset completely. Fans of VR who have been holding off on buying the PS VR2 may now be running out of time.

Despite the fact that numerous VR headsets have been produced over the years by companies like Meta, Sony, and Valve, VR is still a niche within the overall gaming market. While the Meta Quest has been the most popular line of VR headsets available, that doesn’t necessarily make it profitable, as Meta has lost a lot of money by largely selling the headsets at cost. Unfortunately, it seems like the writing may be on the wall for its competitor, the Sony PlayStation VR2.

Sony PlayStation VR2 Is Quietly Disappearing Everywhere

While Sony hasn’t made an official announcement, it looks like the Sony PlayStation VR2 may very well be on its way out. The device has been quietly disappearing from storefronts, beginning with the official PlayStation Direct store. Searching for the device yields a page with the PlayStation VR2 Sense charging station for sale, and information on the headset itself, but no actual store listing for the headset is shown, sold out or otherwise. Attempting to bypass that by accessing the PlayStation VR2’s store page URL directly results in an error 404. If it were simply temporarily unavailable or sold out, the store listing would still be accessible, so this seems to indicate that Sony has no intention of restocking it.

It also appears that direct retailer stock of the PlayStation VR2 is sold out on most online stores. As of publication time, Amazon lists the headset as completely sold out. It’s only available at inflated prices through third-party vendors at Best Buy and Newegg, and both Walmart and GameStop only have pre-owned and refurbished devices available. Since demand for the PlayStation VR2 hasn’t been high since its launch, it’s far more likely that the available stock has run out and won’t be restocked. Sony notably paused PlayStation VR2 production in 2024, which was one of the first indications that things weren’t going well for the device.

While the PlayStation VR2 struggled to find success largely from the get-go, it’s not a good time for virtual reality devices right now in general. High demand for processors, RAM, and even flash media has driven the price of producing VR headsets up just as much as consoles in recent times. The Steam Frame VR headset, which was highly anticipated by VR enthusiasts, arrived with an eye-watering starting price of $1,059, which Valve acknowledged was higher than it would have liked. For Sony, continuing to produce units of a VR headset that didn’t sell well from the beginning, and possibly having to choose between increasing the price or selling at a loss, would be a wise business decision.

Even outside the hardware pricing and availability crisis, other external factors may have made it less likely for the PlayStation VR2 to succeed. Several game studios producing VR games have closed in recent times, and on top of that, Beat Saber stopped delivering PlayStation VR2 updates at the start of 2026. Given that Beat Saber is one of the most popular VR games of all time, anyone who hadn’t yet bought a PS VR2 might have been given pause at that news.
