Sony Files Patent for New PlayStation Controller With Surprise

Sony Files Patent for New PlayStation Controller With Surprise

One of the most surprising controller designs by Sony has resurfaced thanks to a patent finally going public in the United States, and players may be shocked to see just how innovative the device, particularly as it takes a completely different approach to gaming from any other device presently on the market. While the Sony patent was originally filed all the way back in September 2022, the paperwork surprisingly only got its US publication on March 26, 2026, and fans are once again discussing the potential implications of such a controller becoming available to the public.

GameRant initially discovered a patent for this device in July 2025, which was registered in the European Union, and gave audiences a first look at the Sony connecting-nodes game controller. This device is composed of a grid of interlocking deformable button nodes, connected by flexible shafts, granting an almost fabric-like range of movement. The device looks unlike any video game controller previously released for PlayStation consoles, or any competitor systems for that matter, and the broad-scope capabilities of the interlocking shafts and nodes of the wild controller could give a sneak peek into larger research and development plans at Sony.

The US version of the Sony patent perfectly mirrors its EU counterpart, so it may be curious for some fans to see such a delay between the publication of the same registrations. It is worth noting that the newer publication in the US is in no way indicative of Sony revisiting the project and could simply be the result of delayed approvals or backed-up processing by patent offices. That said, the resurfaced controller design is more than deserving of a revisit, since it would allow players to pinch, plug, pull, shift, and twist the device, opening the door for a slew of brand-new gameplay features and mechanics that could massively expand immersive gaming experiences. It also aligns with other Sony gaming accessibility patents and would give disabled players a fresh option for enjoying their favorite titles.

Perhaps the most obvious question surrounding the Sony connecting-nodes game controller is durability, with each shaft and node connection serving as a possible breaking point that would no doubt prove costly to repair or replace. Whether this has played any role in Sony not yet releasing the product to the public is pure speculation, though it would not be unheard of for a major company to patent a technology that never sees the light of day due to production costs or design limitations. Quite a number of Sony technology patents have come and gone with no official announcements or updates, so it remains to be seen if this connecting-nodes controller will ever see further development, let alone an actual release.

It is rather curious that Sony chose to take such a surprisingly new approach to gaming with its patented connecting-nodes game controller, and there is always the possibility that Sony is waiting for game development and design to “catch up” to such an uncanny controller. Being able to fully manipulate a gameplay device could make gamers feel even more like they truly are the character on their screens, whether it be pulling on the device to mimic opening a gate or compressing the nodes together to parrot a character crumpling a piece of paper. As it stands, there is no way of knowing if this unique controller or any other Sony video game hardware patents will evolve to the point of being sold to fans, so interested players will want to stay tuned for any official announcements from Sony about its various patented technologies.
