Sony’s Marvel Tokon Blocked In Over 100 Countries On Steam

Sony’s Marvel Tokon Blocked In Over 100 Countries On Steam

It appears as if Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the upcoming game developed by Arc System Works and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, set to release on August 6, won’t be available in 132 countries on Steam. Why? Well, while there’s no official explanation on the Steam store page, the reason seems to be obvious: you can’t access PlayStation Network in any of the 132 countries listed on SteamDB.

Not a great week to be a social media employee at PlayStation, huh? In what appears to be another Helldivers 2-esque fiasco, SteamDB currently states that the PlayStation 5 and PC exclusive fighting game Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls won’t be available to purchase in 132 very specific countries.

If you’re wondering what is specific about that number, the list of countries under the “known restrictions” list on Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’s SteamDB page perfectly lines up with the same 132 countries that were originally listed on Helldivers 2’s SteamDB page.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has opted to block the purchase of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on PC in 130 countries. The game cannot be purchased on Steam or the Epic Games Store where the PlayStation Network is officially unavailable #MarvelTokonhttps://t.co/JzqH1PBlqI

The list of countries, which includes Jamaica, Iran, Belarus, Egypt, and Nigeria, are all countries where PlayStation Network’s online services aren’t available. Now, if this is indeed the case, and it’s not just some sort of temporary restriction, why exactly has Sony chosen to do this and risk even more negative PR in the process?

The most likely explanation is crossplay. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will feature crossplay between PC and PS5 consoles at launch, which apparently means that you’ll need to link your PSN account to the game on PC if you want to take advantage of this.

That being said, if it is indeed Sony’s excuse for restricting the game in those countries, it’s not a very good one. After all, players on PC could simply choose not to enable crossplay instead. The timing is also pretty suspect in itself, considering that Sony is reportedly set to no longer publish its single-player games on PC, and instead only plans to release its live-service games on the platform from this point onwards.,
