Space Marine 2’s Disastrous Voice Pack DLC Is Being Refunded

Space Marine 2’s Disastrous Voice Pack DLC Is Being Refunded

Just under a month ago, Saber Interactive released a free new update for its well-loved 2024 third-person shooter, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, and accompanied it with a $5 DLC that added a bunch of new voice acting for a selection of the game’s characters. An innocent enough event, and splendid to see the game still being supported two years in, but one that saw its atrocious paid-for new dialogue taking all the attention away from the free addition of a brand new Techmarine class and a new co-op mission. To try to make it right (thanks, PC Gamer), publisher Focus Entertainment has announced it’ll be refunding everyone who bought the DLC pack, and re-releasing it for free.

The Chapter Voice Pack 1 presented itself as if it were going to re-enliven the experience of playing, with all-new dialogue for your favorite characters, a purported 450 new lines, though peculiarly it was not included as part of the game’s season passes but only as a standalone $5 DLC. Except, as IGN reported at the time, it failed to completely revoice the dialogue of characters, meaning that at many points while playing, a character might shift back to their previous voice, making the whole thing feel farcical. Many claimed on Steam that it seemed to primarily consist of new grunting noises, while others suggested that the 450 lines might not be per language, but all languages combined.

This led to an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam for the DLC, which sticks to this very day. Only 16 percent of the 672 current user ratings are positive, with players furious that this was clearly intended to be the first of a number of such packs, since it only re-voiced three of the seven classes. As a response, albeit an extremely slow one, Focus has now posted to X agreeing that it wasn’t good enough. “We heard your feedback regarding the Chapter Voice Pack DLC and wanted to address it,” it reads. “It’s obvious the DLC has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that. Delivering quality content – free or not – is a priority for us.” (It’s always so odd when companies explain how the thing they’re apologizing for not doing is a priority of theirs. Also, this wasn’t free.)

This is why we’ve decided to offer a refund to all owners of the DLC, and to make it free from now on. We are currently setting up the refund with platforms owners and will come back soon with more info.
Always grateful for your dedication to our game.

As a result, everyone who bought the DLC will get their five bucks back, and the voice pack itself will be made free. “We are currently setting up the refund with platforms owners and will come back soon with more info,” Focus adds. “Always grateful for your dedication to our game.”

At the time of writing that switch to free has yet to happen, and the pack remains on sale via Steam despite the issues. Thankfully, despite this misstep, Space Marine II remains completely brilliant, and is currently 67 percent off in Steam’s Spring sale.
